Dog Breeds » What Does AKC Registration Mean?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) is the chief purebred dog registry in the United States. It registers more than a million purebred dogs and hundreds of thousands of litters each year. The AKC is also involved with helping to set the standards for each recognized dog breed. If you want to own a purebred dog, you?ll want to make sure it qualifies for AKC registration. When a puppy is born, its breeder registers the entire litter. The AKC sends the breeder a blue slip for each puppy in the litter and the breeder then signs a slip over to each buyer at the time of purchase. The buyer uses this slip to assign a name to the puppy and officially registers the puppy by paying the $10 registration fee. Soon, the puppy?s own AKC Registration Certificate arrives in the mail! The AKC Registration Certificate contains a lot of information about your dog, including its breed, birth date, and the identities and AKC registration numbers for its dam and sire. This seal of quality is meant to assure a new owner that a dog is purebred. However, you should know that the AKC does not actually examine the puppies or parents before issuing the certification; they rely entirely on the honesty of the breeder. You can imagine, therefore, that some certificates are issued erroneously. For example, an unscrupulous breeder may file for registration on puppies that died (or never even existed) and then falsely assign these forms to puppies of unsure parentage. Honest mistakes can also be made; since a female dog may be inseminated by more than one male during heat, under some circumstances a dam may give birth to a litter that contains some purebreds and some mixed breeds. Since the breeder registers the whole litter at once, a mistake can occur. If, based upon the dog?s physical characteristics, the owner has doubt, the AKC may be asked to investigate. Recent developments in DNA testing have allowed suspicious owners to validate parentage of their dogs, and thus verify the dam and sire information on the AKC Registration Certificate. However, there is no test to identify the breed of a dog and this is unfortunate since some breeds may have overlapping similarities. Thus, a good amount of faith is involved when it comes to interpreting the authenticity and value of AKC registration. This underscores the importance of buying your purebred dog from a reliable and reputable breeder.
