| Where to Find a Dog » Hints for Locating a Responsible Breeder |
| You?ve decided to get a puppy. And you?ve decided which breed you want. Now, it?s time to decide WHERE to find your bundle of joy. There is no shortage of places to find a puppy needing a home. Local shelters, newspaper advertisements, pet stores, and professional breeders all have puppies for sale. However, if you want a purebred puppy and want to make certain you find one that is healthy, you are advised to purchase your puppy from a responsible breeder. But, how do you identify a ?responsible breeder?? One suggestion is to contact the AKC parent club for the breed you want. They will have helpful suggestions for finding a good breeder in your area. You may also get helpful advice from your veterinarian. Breeders range from the ?backyard breeder? who has a small operation, selling a couple of litters per year, to ?puppy mills? that run larger operations geared toward quantity (often at the risk of quality). There are also specialist breeders. These folks usually have more expertise in select breeds and pour a great deal of money and energy into their breeding programs. Because of this, you may find their prices to be higher ? yet the assurance of a high quality dog is higher, too. There are many characteristics of ?responsible? breeders. They must be knowledgeable ? not just about dogs in general, but about the breed in question. Their operation must be kept clean and controlled, yet provide ample opportunity for the puppies to receive individual attention. A good breeder provides medical attention during the puppy?s first few weeks, including any worming or vaccination that is recommended by veterinarians. Of course, it is a great advantageous to discuss the puppy?s history directly with the breeder. This may not be possible if you?re shopping at a pet store that is selling puppies born at a ?puppy mill.? But, if you can, try to learn about the breeder?s practices. If they point out that the puppies receive a lots of human-oriented socialization as they?re growing up, this is a good sign. People who know that a puppy needs affection are sure to be providing a good early home for the pups. Just like people, if puppies have a good start in life, they?ll have a better chance to grow up healthy ? both physically and emotionally. So, when a breeder takes the time to describe specific guidelines used in early rearing practices, you know she cares about the dogs she sells. |
