Training » Adjusting to Apartment Dwelling
Training a dog to live in an apartment has similar aspects to that of living in a home with respect to designating food and sleeping areas. On the other hand, there are distinct differences about apartment dwelling that deserve mention. Some aspects to consider include: Toilet training - As the alert pet owner, monitor your new puppy for signs that he is ready to ?go.? Keep a leash close by so that you?ll be ready when he is ready. As you head out the door, don?t forget supplies for clean-up, too. Wherever you may have determined will be your area to take your dog, it is a courtesy to others (and in many areas, the law), that you be prepared to clean up after him. (See the article on Canine Clean-up.) Exercise areas - Finding an exercise space for your dog can often be combined with finding a relief area too. If you live in a large metropolitan city, you may want to investigate specially designated areas for pets, or doggy parks. These often include a relief area and plenty of room for running and playing, plus interaction with other dogs. If a doggy play area is not convenient, you may be able to find parks or walking paths near your apartment home. Just be mindful that these are places that are shared by others. Either way, this is a good opportunity for your pet to learn social graces, get some much needed exercise, and offer you a chance to do the same by staying fit and meeting others who have the same interests. Noise (barking and whining) - Unfortunately, it is a fact that dogs will bark and whine and it is possible that this type of behavior will occur when you are away from your pet. Over time, your dog will learn that your absences are short and you WILL return. If you keep regular work hours, your dog will adjust to your hours and realize that there is no need for the emotional displays. In the meantime, however, you can encourage ?quiet? behavior through the same steps as housetraining by including praise for good behavior and chastising when not. Also be mindful of your neighbors and whether they can hear your pet from their home. Remember to be courteous about their rights as apartment dwellers, too. Once you have addressed these issues with your pet, through positive reinforcement, you and your pet can enjoy a happy life as apartment dwellers.
