Training » Potty Training a Puppy
Potty training your puppy is not as difficult as it might seem. The key is to teach your puppy the right thing to do rather than punish him or her for accidents. Puppies are creatures of habit. They eat, sleep, and eliminate on a pretty set schedule. It is up to you as its leader to understand and use this schedule to your advantage when teaching any behavior you desire, including potty training. The first thing to focus on is your puppy?s body language. Most puppies will begin to sniff around, make a circle, or pace before eliminating. If you notice these behaviors, bring the puppy outside immediately. When your puppy is just waking from a nap or finishing a meal, he or she will be ready to go potty. Don?t wait for the body language to manifest itself. Take puppy outside and wait for Mother Nature to take over. It will likely be right away! Take your puppy to the same spot every time. He or she will begin to understand, by the odor of his or her elimination, that this spot is his or her territory. Don?t clean the area too thoroughly until your puppy is completely potty trained. Be sure to keep your puppy on a leash when taking it outside to prevent wandering. This will help the puppy keep focused on the task at hand. Praise your puppy using the same language each time he or she eliminates in the correct area. Tell your puppy to ?go potty,? or ?do your business,? ? any phrase that you will remember to use on a consistent basis. Treat this training like any other ? use a higher pitched, happy tone of voice and your puppy will soon learn that going potty in the right place is a good thing! Because puppies will eliminate in the same spot time and again, you need to be diligent in preventing odors from accumulating indoors. If you do not thoroughly clean your carpets after your puppy has an accident, he or she will continue to use that area. Don?t just blot up the mess with a paper towel. Dogs can smell odors far better than humans and even if we think the area is clean and odor-free, the dog may still detect them. Use a good enzymatic cleaner designed to eliminate odors, not just cover them up. If there is a large area that needs cleaning, invest in a shampooer or your carpet may soon be ruined by urine stains. Remember: don?t punish your puppy for doing something that comes naturally. He or she will soon learn the proper place to eliminate through proper training and praising for a job well done!
