Understanding Your Dog » Dog Communication
Many of us are in tune with our dogs? communication and can understand what they?re ?saying.? After all, all dog owners know that dogs can and do ?talk.? It just takes patience and dedication to follow their message and truly understand what they want to communicate. Dogs use barking and howling as a means of short to medium-range communication and, according to researchers, it is a relatively complex system. One researcher, Dr. Dorit Feddersen-Petersen at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, has gone to great lengths to identity and categorize different dog barks and behaviors. By recording and studying 84 dogs from nine breeds, during normal and mixed-play sessions, she was eventually able to tell what the dog was doing by its bark, without actually seeing the animal. The first step for those of us just learning to speak ?dog? is to listen carefully to the sound our dog is making. Is it noisy or harmonious? Harmonic barks signal social play or contact with another animal or human. The dog is happy and approachable. Noisy barks are more problematic and are a good indicator of aggression, insecurity, or distress. Continuous and fast barking at a medium pitch means, ?Keep an eye out ? someone is approaching our territory.? Continuous and slow barking at a low pitch means, ?The danger is closer. I?m getting prepared to defend myself.? Fast barking with pauses every 3 or 4 yelps means, ?This might be a problem ? why don?t you investigate?? Long and drawn-out barks at a high pitch with pauses between each one means, ?I'm lonely. I need company (and/or a treat).? One or two short high pitched barks are the most normal greeting. One normal pitched bark indicates curiosity or alertness. One short bark in a high pitch means ?What a surprise!? If it's repeated twice, it means "Hey, check this out!" If the short barks continue, then you?re being summoned. Many dogs use this when they want to go out. A brief bark, at medium pitch means, ?I?m happy.? A faltering bark at medium pitch, ?Can we play now?? Howl or short bark at a high pitch indicates a response to sudden pain ("Ouch!"). Repeated howls and regular intervals need your immediate attention. They indicate that the dog is either in extreme pain or is very frightened of something. Study this little ?primer? and you?ll be on your way to better communication with your cherished pet.
