Understanding Your Dog » A Puppys Need to Chew
A puppy?s need to chew is natural. When he or she is teething, chewing helps to develop strong teeth and jaws. Problems arise because your puppy will chew on anything it can get its teeth into! To prevent damage to your personal property, follow one or all of these simple tips. 1. Fill your home with toys! Puppies love anything that shakes, rattles, rolls, squeaks, or crinkles. Your puppy may have a preference, but there are so many toys on the market today that finding one that suits your puppy will not be a problem. Be sure to avoid toys that are made of soft rubber. They are easily torn apart and the puppy could choke on the small pieces. If your puppy succeeds at removing the squeaker in a toy?this seems to be a goal of most puppies?be sure to throw it away. Toys with heavy knots are great for teething puppies. Get one that is small enough for your puppy to get its mouth around. 2. Many puppies enjoy ice cubes to soothe their gums. Try freezing some chicken broth to make the ice cubes more palatable for the puppy. Be sure to clean up any leftover water to prevent slips or falls. 3. Frozen teething rings that have been designed for puppies are another great option. Don?t get ones that are made for human babies. The sharp canine teeth of a puppy would destroy them almost instantly and cause choking. 4. Try out products that you can fill with peanut butter or other tasty treats. Your puppy will spend hours licking and chewing on them. 5. Rawhide chews can be a good option, but your puppy should never be left alone with them. They will eventually become small enough to swallow and are a real choking hazard. Some people don?t like the residue of rawhide. It gets gummy and dries to a hard glue, which can be difficult to remove from carpets. Give your puppy its rawhide on a blanket to prevent damage to your belongings. 6. Real bones, especially with a little meat still attached, are very attractive to puppies. Many butcher shops sell bones that they have cut particularly for dogs. Heavy beef bones are the best option. Don?t give your puppy chicken or pork bones. The bone is too soft, splinters easily, and can cause choking problems. The splinters may also be swallowed and could puncture the stomach or intestines of your puppy. 7. Most importantly, don?t give your puppy an old shoe or sock to chew. They cannot tell the difference between your expensive dress shoes or an old sneaker. Both will have your scent and if you have offered one as a gift, your puppy will just assume that all shoes were created just for him or her! By teaching your puppy appropriate chewing habits, you will prevent problem chewing in the future. Keep your puppy happy, mentally stimulated and entertained and he or she will leave your personal items alone.
