| Selecting a Dog » How to Choose a Puppy Name |
| Now that you have welcomed your new puppy to your home, it?s time to think about choosing its name. This is not something to rush into lightly. Take your time. Often, you?ll find a puppy?s behavior will inspire an idea for its name. Therefore, you?ll want to wait and see if, over the course of the first few days at home, the perfect name jumps out at you! For example, the name ?Snoopy? isn?t confined to Charlie Brown?s beagle. If your puppy (of any breed) has the curiosity of a cat, ?Snoopy? may be just right for him. A playful, ball of energy brings to mind the old standard ?Sparky.? Of course, many owners choose names that are suggestive of physical features of the dog. This is especially apparent with coat color. How many dogs have you known called ?Blackie,? ?Goldie,? ?Ginger,? or ?Spot?? Still other owners choose names that are ?people? names. ?Frank,? ?Mollie,? or ?Trixie? come to mind. You may want to choose a classic name or the name of a famous TV or movie character. For example, ?Rocky,? ?Scully,? ?Caesar? or ?Scarlet? are great names for almost any breed of dog. However, you may prefer a name that seems to fit the breed and the dog?s eventual size and shape. ?Bruiser? for a mastiff or ?Tiny? for a Chihuahua are great fits (though, admittedly, the reverse would also be interesting and fun choices). Of course, if your dog is a purebred and you have an AKC Registration Certificate, the full official name will be much more complex and unique than the name you use in common everyday use. Don?t get too complicated with the name the dog itself needs to know. Keeping it fairly short or simple will be a big help for friends, family members, and veterinary staff who need to learn your dog?s name. If the right name doesn?t come to mind, you may need a little help. There are a number of web sites (including this one) that provide extensive lists of names for both male and female dogs and include the common definition for these names. Take a look at these and see if any strike you as a good match for your puppy. The key thing to remember is to choose a name that seems to fit your puppy and make sure it?s a name you like. With luck, you?ll be using this name ? and your dog will be responding to it ? for many years to come. |
