| Selecting a Dog » Adopting an Adult Dog |
| There are many reasons for adopting an adult dog. A potential owner may not have the time or knowledge to train a puppy, or it may be as simple as wanting a more mature companion. Adoption agencies abound; a person can look in the newspaper, on the local pet center?s bulletin board, or on the Internet to find an ideal dog. Considering adult dog adoption means making some informed decisions which include: where the dog will spend most of its time, the new owner?s desired breed, weight issues, feeding requirements, health care costs, and the dog?s previous personal history. Some breeds do well living outside, but others cannot survive certain weather conditions. Consider this fact at the outset of a proposed adult dog adoption. Also, you will need to think about safety equipment. Is the yard fenced? Are there chew toys available? Is there ample shade and shelter from bad weather? If a dog will remain mostly indoors, ask if the breed is known for chewing furniture or walls. This will makes a big difference in your enjoyment of a new pet. Dog size is also important. Adult dogs have usually completed their growth by the time they are adopted. This helps a person determine how much food will be necessary to keep the dog at optimum weight and if they will fit into the owner?s environment. Some breeds require more health care than others, due to their size or body features. One of the most crucial things to consider is the dog?s personal history. If this dog was lost for a long time, abused, or underfed, it may have anger issues. This can be hard to overcome. Of course, if you have children, pick a sociable breed rather than a guard type dog. Now that you?ve answered all the questions above, where do you find an adoptable dog? Local veterinarians usually have a bulletin board where other clients post notices of available pets. This is a good source, because the veterinarian is often familiar with the offered pet and can give you insight into its behavior and general health. Another good place is Petfinders.com or Humane Society websites. These sites do not have personal contact with the animals, but offer photos and descriptions from the owners themselves. Many are rescued animals or pets the owner can no longer keep. Finally, visit the local animal shelter. There is a small fee for spaying or neutering and rabies shots. Adopting an adult dog is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Once you have done your research, your new pet will easily adapt to you and your home. Your adult dog will be grateful for a nice, new home and you will quickly grow to love your new pet. |
