| You?ve done your research, selected a breed, decided on gender and now the big moment has arrived?it?s time to choose your puppy! It is important to choose a pet that will be trainable and suitable for your personality. There are many methods for testing your puppy?s aptitude, but the general purpose is to assess a puppy?s level of dominance, their ability to be trained, and their level of interest in people. Puppy testing should take place away from littermates in a secure area. Is the puppy so fearful that it will not move or is it so hyperactive that it resembles the energizer bunny? You will probably want your pet to fall somewhere in the middle, playful but not hyperactive. Testing your puppy?s level of dominance will help you to avoid an overly aggressive dog. Crouch down and gently roll the puppy onto his back; hold him with your hands. Did the puppy struggle? Did the puppy struggle some and then settle or did it freeze in terror? Bossy puppies will continue to struggle and shy puppies will simply freeze. To test your puppy?s sociability, put the puppy down facing you. Take a few steps away and bend over and call to him gently. You may need to coax a little by crouching down and opening your arms. Does the puppy hesitate and then happily trot towards you? Does the puppy come over and nip at you or does it trot away to inspect something in a corner? A little hesitation is fine, but you want the puppy to respond to you. Nipping is an indication that the dog is bossy. To effectively train and communicate with your dog it has to respond to affection. Praising and petting are integral to training your dog. Stroke the puppy and talk to him lovingly. In this exercise you do not want to hold the dog, let him decide whether he wants to stay with you or not. Does the puppy walk away and want nothing to do with you? Does he cower in fear? Does he happily stay and lick your hand? You want a puppy that wants affection enough to earn it. This will make training easier. It is hard to resist a cute little puppy, but allow your head and not your heart to rule. Take every step to ensure that you and your new pet will be able to establish a good relationship before you bring him home. |
