Which breed is the right one for you depends on your needs, your lifestyle, and your home. First, why do you want a dog? Is it strictly for your own companionship? Or are you seeking a dog that will be good with children, too? If so, you?ll want a dog that likes kids and has a calm disposition. You?ll want to make sure the breed is known to stay playful even into adulthood. Be aware that not all dog breeds are ?children-friendly.? Do you need a dog that will serve as protection? Again, not all breeds are suitable as watchdogs, so you must select wisely. You don?t want a watchdog that will roll over and let a thief pet its tummy! If so, there are many breeds that fit this description. Are you on a budget? Some of the more specialized or rare breeds can be quite expensive to purchase and maintain. However, the more common breeds can be found at very reasonable prices. In other words, although you may think of many characteristics or restrictions you require of your new best friend, chances are there are several breeds that will match these traits.
