    Breed: Havanese
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Senior
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Havanese (long coat). Ricky & Pepper have always been at each other's side and are BFFs. They were purchased from a breeder as puppies, and have lived their whole lives in the same home with the same family. Their dad recently passed away, and their mom is now living with her daughter and son-in-law, who do not want to keep the dogs... so these sweet senior pups now find themselves homeless. Thankfully, their mom reached out to rescue, and they have both now settled into a new foster home. Our hope is to keep them together. The duo has good house manners, and their foster mom has not had to use a crate for them. They were pee pad trained in their prior home, but have quickly learned to go potty outside. They are good with other dogs and have done well with the other dog in their foster home. Both dogs were a little overweight when they first came in, but with regular daily walks as a new part of their routine, they have each taken off a few pounds. They enjoy the walks and are pretty good on leash, and as long as other dogs on the street don’t react, Ricky is fine when he meets them, but he will bark if barked at. This is a new experience for both dogs, so they are still adjusting and will improve with training. Their foster mom tells us that both dogs are pretty mellow in the house. Ricky is the more excited of the two, and will bark when it's walk time, while Pepper barks when it's food time. Pepper really wants to be a lap dog and stays close to her foster mom, and will follow her around the house. Ricky is interested, but is more independent and LOVES to hang out in his dog bed. More to come on Ricky & Pepper as we get to know them. Because of their long history together, we will only adopt them out as a pair. Apply today! Casey

    rescue
    Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. This beautiful girl is a victim of breed discrimination, which is one of the reason why our shelters and rescues are overrun with “pit bull” type dogs. Casey was adopted as a puppy from a rural SC rescue to a loving family, and has lived in a good home her whole life. When Casey was a puppy there was no conflict with her living in the community, but as she grew, her family became more aware of the ignorance about her breed and bias of their HOA and neighbors. One day, Casey got out of the front door and saw one of the neighbor kids riding by on their bike and decided to run along with him. She never showed any aggression, or made contact with the boy, but the boy’s mom was terrified and complained to the HOA. There was a big uproar about the “pit bull” breed being allowed to live in the community and the family was pressured to remove her. Casey lived with the same family since she was 12 weeks old. She is kid friendly ++ and was raised with 5 kids, ages 2 to 13 years old. Her former owner describes her as a very snuggly dog, and she never had any concerns with Casey around the kids, she was very respectful. Casey loves to be near people, and was not left alone for long hours of time. When they did leave her alone, they would crate her, as she had some chewing tendencies as a puppy. She has not had a lot of exposure to leash walking, so she will need practice and some basic training on leash. Casey is now in our care and her foster mom confirms that she is a lovely, affectionate, and social dog. She’s still an adolescent, but is pretty well-mannered for a young pup. She’s crate trained, potty trained, and knows her basic commands. She’s more of a submissive pup who loves other dogs and loves to play, and would be ideal with kids. She’s very people oriented and well socialized. As a young dog, she still has some things to learn like not to jump up when she gets too excited, but understands NO, and quickly corrects. She’s a smart girl who really wants to please. We are planning to bring Casey to N. VA on 1/27/18. Looking for a FOSTER or ADOPTER to welcome this sweet girl home. Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Setter / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Evan, This gorgeous guy was rescued from a high intake shelter in rural SC. Evan's owner recently surrendered him in the hopes that he'd be able to find a better home than he could provide to him. His owner used to breed hunting dogs and decided that as he had gotten older, it makes sense to discontinue the practice. Evan has been raised around other dogs and cats. He's interacted with children while at his home too. It's been reported by the shelter that he's a friendly gent. Evan has sadly never lived in a home as he was raised as an "outdoor" dog, as many hunting dogs are. As Evan was bred to be a working dog, he will thrive in a home who will be sure to exercise both his mind and body. If you are interested in either fostering or adopting Evan, please do apply today. FOSTER UPDATE 1/9/18 This gorgeous pup is settling in quickly to his local foster home, and loves being an indoor dog and all the attention. He's being fostered as an only dog with 2 teen kids in his home to play with. He loves toys and to chase the tennis ball in the back yard. He's pretty mellow inside, but seems to enjoy walk time. He's had a few poop accidents in the house, but his foster mom is using the crate now and working on his potty training. He's not a big fan of the crate, but she's been giving high value treats in there to make it a positive experience, and using it when she goes to work. If you take him out regularly, he's knows to go outside. The accidents have happened when he's been left free roam during the day, when crated there are no issues. He has his first bath and did well. His foster mom held him and he was not loving the bath, but made no fuss and there was no struggle. She describes Evan as, "a total sweetheart who doesn't have a mean bone in his body" He sleeps in his foster mom's bedroom in a bean bag chair at night and is still adjusting to some of the sights and sounds of home life - vacuum, tea pot etc but settling in well. For a young dog, Evan has a very moderate energy level. He greets visitors to the home well, and will lay down right next to you very calm. He's loving, but not needy and has some independence. He's really a sweet, laid back boy. Apply today. Journey - AD...

    Breed: Shih Tzu-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed (long coat). Journey was found standing in the middle of a busy highway in South Carolina, with cars speeding all around her. A mere 5lbs when she was rescued, the Good Samaritan who stopped to help her wasn't certain she was even a dog. She was emaciated and dehydrated, her fur was matted and infested, and every bone was protruding from her tiny body. She was close to death, and had this kind-hearted person not stopped to help, her story would have ended very differently. Considering the condition she was in, you have to wonder how she got there, and how many people let her down along the way. Amazingly, her rescuer knew one of our SC volunteers who contacted our team for help. Journey was taken immediately to the animal hospital who did an incredible job saving her. She was put on IV fluids and antibiotics, and for more than a week we didn't know whether she would make it. Over many, many visits to the vet and lots of tests, she pulled through. Journey is only 3 years old and has an amazing spirit, but she has endured more in her short life than any dog should ever have to. Thankfully, Journey also has an incredible foster mom, Linda, who has been committed to her rehabilitation over the last three months. In the beginning, she would wake up in the middle of the night to feed her small meals to help her regain some strength, and accompanied her on many trips to the vet. We learned that Journey is diabetic and requires insulin shots twice a day, and has very limited vision as a result of the diabetes. She can make out shadows, and has now learned the layout of her home, but also responds to the warmth of her foster mom's voice, wagging her tail with enthusiasm to greet her. Because of Linda's dedication, Journey has now stabilized, weighs over 12lbs, has a new, velvety fur coat, and looks like the sassy Shih Tzu she was born to be. Now that Journey is healthy, she's learning how to interact as part of a family. She's being fostered with 3 dogs and a cat, and does well with all of them. She's crate trained and likes to sleep in her crate at night, and is working on her potty training. She needs time to find her way around a new area, but she's getting stronger every day and is ready to take on new challenges. She will be coming to N. VA late this month, ready to start her new life. Journey will probably be on insulin and eye drops for the rest of her life, so she needs a special someone who is willing to commit to her care, and in return will get an incredibly grateful and loving companion. Please consider opening up your heart to this sweet pup... Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Boxer Mix
    Sex: Female Female

    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Mishka! This awesome pup was found as a stray by animal control and has been in a foster home in W VA for almost 6 months. She’s being fostered with 4 other dogs (2 large and 2 small) and prefers to play with the larger dogs. She’s a little rough and tumble in her play for the small dogs, but is getting better with respecting their space. She was just cat tested and did great, she had no reaction or instinct to chase the kitty. Mishka is crate trained, house trained, and will let you know when she has to go out to potty, jumping at the door to alert you. She even taught herself to ring the bell to go outside She has free roam of the home when her foster family is home, but is crated during the day when the family works, and sleeps in the bed at night with the rest of her foster pack. She has a food obsession, most likely from going without in the past, so her foster family feeds her separately from the other dogs, but she has zero guarding issues with people when it comes to food, toys, or bones. Her foster mom says she’s very smart and responds well to verbal correction. She’s still perfecting her leash walking skills and does better walking on a harness, but practice makes perfect and we expect her to be an excellent student when she comes to N. VA. She's a very smart dog who adapts to her surroundings. She is consistently around the 84 year old grandmother who visits and has stability issues, and Mischka is respectful of her space. She does not jump around her and adjusts her behavior Mishka has a moderate energy level, so she is up for hikes or an outing, but is also a great chill-out dog who loves to snuggle. You will rarely catch her laying by herself in the home, as she is always snuggled up with a person or one of the dogs. Mishka is definitely a people-pleaser and a confident dog. She loves meeting new people, and will roll over for a belly rub and give a high five. Mishka’s foster mom describes her as a silly, quirky, fun, lovable freckle-faced kid. We hope to bring her to N. VA soon and are looking for a FOSTER or ADOPTER to welcome her to town. Breed: Doxle
    Sex: Male Male
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Beagle / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Toby was originally found by a police officer a few years ago chained to a tree. He was adopted to a local family with a young toddler, and settled in quickly. At Christmas, Toby’s mom and toddler son were building a ginger bread house, when toddler went to share some food with Toby, and then tried to take the food back out of his mouth. Toby was going for the food, not the toddler, and nipped him. No damage, or stitches, and we really feel Toby was put in a bad position. Toby’s dad got angry and wanted him removed from the home, so his mom reached out to one of our volunteers for help. Toby is being fostered with multiple small dogs, and a kitty, and does well with both. His foster mom describes him as a very sweet dog who is more mellow than active. He does ok on a leash, but has not had a lot of practice. He’s a pretty confident, well-adjusted pup who likes to lay beside his foster mom on the couch, or follow her around. He shares toys well with the other dogs, and takes treats very gently from her hand. We’ve been really monitoring that to see if there are any issues. He’s potty trained, and being introduced to the crate. More to come on this cute little guy as he settles in. We hope to bring him to N. VA on 1/27/18 and need a FOSTER or ADOPTER to welcome him to town. Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Bailey is a young, active, affectionate Lab mix who was taken in by Good Samaritans after she ran in front of their truck. She had escaped from her local home, and whey the tried to return her, her owner did not want her anymore. Being good people who care, they took Baily in to make sure she was safe and warm, and reached out to Worthy Dog for help. Bailey is currently being fostered with two Huskies, a cat, and a 4 month old baby, and does well with all. The family has their hands full with a newborn in the home, but have remained committed to Bailey. They’ve had her about 7 weeks now and say that she loves the other dogs and always wants to play. She will chase the cat from time to time, but that cat knows how to put her in her place. She has been very gentle and respectful around the baby, and would do well in a home with kids to run and play with. Her foster parents have been using the crate to reinforce potty training. She is good in the crate, and never has accidents in her crate. She’s had a few accidents in the house, but is learning quickly. She’s a pretty active pup who would love to have a secure fenced yard to romp and play in. She’s new to the leash and will need some practice. Her foster family lives in a more rural area, so daily walks are not currently a part of her routine. Bailey’s foster parents describe her as a very loving dog. There are times when they wonder if her former owner mistreated her as she can be timid around loud, sudden movements, but they also see her engaging side. She loves to cuddle with her family and pup buddies, and will lay on top of the other dogs. She quickly bonded to her foster family. We hope to bring Bailey to N. VA on 1/27. Boxer-Unknown Mix Dog For Adoption in Arlington, VA, USA

    Sadie

    rescue
    Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed. Meet sweet Sadie. This sassy little pup is a social gal, and very affectionate with people and other dogs. She was found as a stray running down a busy road, probably dumped by her owner, but thankfully a Good Samaritan took her in and reached out to rescue to help find her a loving home. Sadie is only about 8 months old, still has a puppy playfulness in her, and will make an excellent companion for another young, active dog. She is crate trained, walks well on leash, and enjoys car rides. She loves to play fetch, and once she’s had her activity and playtime, would prefer to snuggle up with you on the couch. Her foster mom has been taking her to doggy day care and she loves it, and comes home very relaxed. A win-win! Sadie will make a great family dog. She loves people, is very happy and gentle around kids, and has a very balanced personality. She is very welcoming to new people, but may jump and want to give them kisses. Her foster family is currently remodeling some rooms and have contractors in and out, so there is a lot of noise and activity, and Sadie just rolls with it. FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 12/14/17 Sadie is still a puppy and needs someone who is willing to work with her a little on basic training issues. She's very motivated by food so basic commands are coming along very quickly with her. She can "sit", "wait" for her food and before going outside so she doesn't trample the door, and she is getting the hang of "heel". She's a very social gal, very submissive, and has been great with both our dog Tucker and other friend's dog. She adjusts her playing style to suite the other dog's personality which is awesome. She can be a little intimidated by men the first time she meets them, its best to let her come to them verses approaching her. She was a little afraid of my husband when she first met him, but she was comfortable the next day. She became pretty attached to me just over the first night so I think she will bond quickly with a new owner. She has the potential to be a little protective of her house/home/family, and barks occasionally when new people come into my house but she accepts them pretty quickly and is still new to our home. She is moderate to high energy. She is play-play-play all day with Tucker but when he is in his crate for a little separation, she will find a toy to play with. She LOVES to play fetch and will play it all day if she could. She is a big chewer so she needs chew toys lying around. If there's nothing available, she can chew household items but is easily redirected with proper toys. In the evenings, she loves to lay on the couch and chew a bone or snuggle. She can be a big cuddle bug and enjoys laying on my lap. She likes to be wherever I am so she tends to follow me around the house. She is actually really good on leash. She has her pulling moments of course but for the most part she sticks close to me and is learning to heel.. She's pretty go with the flow on leash, she follows tucker around most of the time. She is crate trained although she doesn't always want to go in. She goes in easily when I give her a kong with peanut butter when I leave for work. She whines a bit if I put her in there during the day when I'm running around the house and she can't see me but is good when I'm visible. She does very well in the crate at night time. She has not had a single accident in the crate showing her ability to hold her bladder until its time for a walk. She is not yet 100% potty trained so she will need someone who has accessibility to a yard/outside area for quick trips. As long as I take her outside every few hours while she has free roam/play in the house, we don't have any issues. We still haven't been able to establish a signal with her of how to let us know she needs to go out though so she will need continued work in that area. She needs some basic structure that all young pups need in terms of potty training/learning some basic commands (not jumping up on people, stay, etc.) and will need someone who can give her the energy outlet that she deserves. Overall, she is just a sweetheart and will be very loving to her new family. I'll probably cry when she gets adopted.
