Posted Breed: Mastiff. Adoption Fee: 225. PLEASE NOTE: GPMR communicates primarily by email. If you have any questions regarding one of our Mastiffs, please read their bio and if you still have questions- drop us an email at info@greatplainsmastiffrescue.org . If you have questions about our adoption procedures, please go to our Pages of Interest on the left hand column under "Adoption Info." We answer email inquiries almost immediately-usually always within a few hours and phone calls are returned with 24-36 hours. GPMR does not have a shelter. All of our dogs are kept in loving foster homes. We must have a completed adoption application on file before meeting any of our mastiffs. GPMR adopts to the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana and parts of Colorado. !!!Any mastiffs being adopted out of the state of Oklahoma require a health certificate to be paid for by the adopter!!! UPDATE: Due to Goliath's age and advancing arthritis, he is now a "hospice" foster and will stay with his foster dad for whatever quality time he has left. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Meet Goliath! Although his age in years is 11, his "Spirit Age" is so much younger. Goliath, sadly, was surrendered by his owners when they moved and were unable to take him. He is very shy with strangers at first, but warms up quickly, especially when offered belly rubs! Goliath prefers to be around an older more mature crowd, so a family without young children is necessary. He has spent most of his life outside, and is now working on adjusting to being an inside dog. He has shown his foster family that his most treasured discovery is his inside soft doggie bed! Such a simple discovery with life changing results. Goliath came to GPMR with ear and eye infections, both of which have been treated. He did test positive for heartworms, which is has not shown to be severe and can be treated with monthly heart worm prevention. He is also on supplements for arthritis, which help him act his "Spirit Age". Goliath's trademark, and funniest trait, is his super long tongue which tends to hang out on the floor when he is laying down. This gentle giant would be a great addition to the right family so get your applications in today! Goliath is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

More About Mastiff Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Meet Jack! Jack was rescued over the summer when he was found laying in a ditch on the side of the road. At 67 pounds he was emaciated and he would not have made it much longer being outside in the summer heat. A local rescued picked up Jack and started him on the road to health before transferring him to GPMR to find him a forever home. The vet estimates Jack between 1.5 and 2 years old. Jack was diagnosed with Ehrlichia which a disease that is caused by a tick bite. Some dogs have Ehrlichica and never show any signs of it, but poor Jack had several episodes of fevers and joiint pain. Those flare ups were treated and he has been doing great ever since. We had an approved home waiting for Jack but sadly they had to withdraw their application due to an illness with their other dog. So now we are searching for a forever home for Jack! Jack has a very loving personality and he does great with other dogs. He's not been around cats since we've had him. Jack would do great in a home with kids over 5 years. Jack is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Meet Bear! Bear was rescued from a shelter in AR. He is estimated at 5 years old. He looks like he's had a rough life before coming to us. He has callouses on his legs indicating he was probably living outside on rough surface. His coat was thin and patchy but has improved now that we've got him on a good diet. Bear has been good with other dogs and is learning to live with cats as well. He's done great with kids. This boy is really just a big teddy bear. This poor guy has been through a lot since we've had him. Bear tested positive for heartworms and started treatment, but then started having several fainting spells, so the vet felt it was best to stop the treatment as he was worried Bear's heart wouldn't be able to take it. Bear also had surgery to remove bladder stones that were obtructing him. He now is on a prescription diet to keep those from reforming, which costs approximately $85 a bag. With our winter weather rolling in, Bear has started showing signs of arthritis. We've started him on supplements to see if that will help. Despite all of this, he has remained and loving and loyal companion. He is looking for a special home, is that home yours? If you aren't able to adopt, please consider a donation for his care! Bear is being fostered in Edmond, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Meet Tyson! He was rescued by a good samaritan when their neighbor was not caring for him proerly. They nursed Tyson back to health but wanted him to go to a family where he could be provided with the veterinary care that he needed. Tyson's vet visit was full of information. We learned that he is at least 10 years old. He came in with terrible skin and ear infections which we are currently treating. He had fleas and intestinal parasites, both which have been treated. He unfortunately tested positive for heartworm but the vet doesn't recommend treatment due to his age. The vet also suspects Tyson has testicular cancer as he was never neutered which would have prevented this condition. Due to Tyson's advanced age and medical issues, he is considered a "Hospice Foster" meaning his foster home will provide a loving home and keep him happy for as much time as he left. So far he seems unaware he has these health problems and is in good spirits. Please consider making a donation for his care as he will have several follow up vet visits! Tyson has an amazing personality and temperament wise is a great represenation of the Mastiff breed. He loves meeting new people, being close to his foster parents and of course begging for food at the table. He's getting a lot of TLC in foster care. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Tyson is being fostered near Little Rock, AR. Austin will stay with his foster family until he is ready to cross the bridge. Please keep them in your thoughts and consider a donation for his care, as his veterinary bills have been several hundred dollars. Thank you. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Meet Austin! This sweet boy was found as a stray and when his owner did not reclaim him from the shelter, he came to GPMR. At 109 pounds, Austin is just skin and bones, it seems he's been wandering a while. We treated him for intestinal parasites and fleas, as well as for an ear infection. Austin unfortunately tested positive for heartworms and will begin treatment once's he is healthier and put on some much needed weight. The vet thinks he is about 3 to 4 years old. Austin in true Mastiff fashion loves to be with his people. Despite what he's been through he is a very sweet and loving dog. We'll post more about Austin once we get a chance to know him better.
