Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). Momo is a huge goofball. With this dog there are no strangers, just friends he hasn’t met yet. He is playful and friendly with everyone. He is a bull in a china shop and does not realize how big and strong he is. Unfortunately, he will knock a small child over with his over excitement, so he would be best in a home with children over the age of 12. He's quite a showstopper, when he's out and about he attracts a lot of attention, and he loves it! Momo just wants to play and nap. He is not a high endurance dog, 15 minutes of play in the backyard and he is worn out for the day… oh, and he doesn’t like to start his day before noon. He likes to sleep in. Mo is a counter surfer and a food stealer. He acts as though he is sooooooo deprived and never gets a meal….he will swipe ANY food right off your plate and counter. He is quickly learning no means no. Momo is the typical stubborn bulldog, he needs someone that knows what bulldogs are all about. Someone advanced in handling this breed. He is very food motivated therefore training is easy for him. He was wild and untamed when adopted from the shelter 2 years ago. He will need follow through and continuance of training and he will be an amazing dog for someone. Mo is eager to please and does as he told, in his own time, as is typical for his breed. ;-) I believe it is possible the owner that surrendered him to the shelter may have verbally abused him. He needs gentle, firm correction. If he is yelled at, he becomes fearful. He’s a fantastic, sensitive dog who deserves a home with great humans who understand him. He’s currently living with three dogs, and a cat, and gets along with all of them. He truly is an amazing dog. If you are interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application at www.americanbaaulldogrescue.org so we can see if he/she would be a good fit for you and your family. It is our policy at American Bulldog Rescue not to place the same gender dogs in a home. Adoptions are most successful and harmonious with opposite genders. Please also note: No one will be considered without first submitting an adoption application. Our dogs are in homes and only approved adopters can meet them. Once approved, you can meet any dog you like that would be a good fit for you/your family. PLEASE READ: Adopters will not be considered without completing an application. Please visit www.AmericanBulldogRescue.org to apply! Remember - Adoption is always the best option! If you can't help by adopting a homeless pet, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to American Bulldog Rescue, 4 Terry Drive, Suite 1D Newtown, PA 18940 or paypal AmericanBulldogRescue@verizon.net. We cannot place dogs in homes with children under 10 unless that dog has lived with kids or is in a foster home with kids. Thank you. To be considered for adoption, you must apply using our free, online application. Our dogs are fostered in our volunteers' homes, not in a central shelter/location. Only approved applicants are put into contact with the foster family to setup a meeting with the foster dog. American Bulldog

Overview: Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a wagering sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring—Bulldogs had taller, more athletic frames (much like the Olde English Bulldogge). When bull baiting was outlawed in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more relaxed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original Bulldogs. Great family dogs, American Bulldogs are sweet to children. They love family-oriented occasions and want to be involved. With proper training and socialization, you’ll find them outgoing and exceedingly loyal. Some American Bulldogs will go to great lengths to protect their masters. Tough and determined, American Bulldogs have an impressive stamina and strength. They are always game for playtime in the back yard or working in the field.
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight (lbs): male-70-120 female-60-100
Height (in): 19-27
Colors: white, brindle, brown, red or tan
Coat: Short, coarse coat. For such a short haired dog, American Bulldogs shed more than you might think. Their short coarse hairs come off on your hands when you pet them, and stick tenaciously to your clothing, upholstery, and carpeting.
Character: American Bulldogs are friendly, happy lovable dogs with an assertiveness and confidence that never gets out of control. Though initially stubborn in training, they soon respond to their masters’ commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.
Temperament: American Bulldogs are loyal and loving animals that prefer to be with people. They do well with children, when socialized from a young age. May not do well with other dogs.
Care: The short coat requires infrequent bathing and brushing.
Training: This breed needs firm, consistent, but not harsh training. They are highly trainable and can be used as agility or search and rescue dogs.
Activity: American Bulldogs MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored American Bulldogs can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: American Bulldogs generally live from 10 to 16 years, and tend to be strong, physically active, and often healthy. Some health problems in American bulldogs are often found within certain genetic lines, and are not common to the entire breed, while others, such as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL),[1] Ichthyosis, disorders of the kidney and thyroid, ACL tears, hip dysplasia, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, entropion, ectropion, and bone cancer are more common to the general population of American Bulldogs. There are DNA tests available to help breeders screen breeding animals for NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis)[1] and Ichthyosis. It is highly recommended to spend time to research your breeder information, including your American Bulldog's family history. A Penn Hip (Pennsylvania Hip Improvement project) or OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) screening is recommended for all potential breeding animals. Some breeds of American Bulldog are prone to allergies. Symptoms like a runny nose or a rash are examples of signs of allergies. Some vets recommend dog owners to give 25 mg of Benadryl per day; in most cases it helps.
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About American Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Dog:Timmy Age:11 months Weight:47 lbs Location:Philadelphia, PA Nicknames:TT, Timothy Good with other dogs?:Yes. Amazing! Of course, Timmy is small and isn't very agile so any new dog friends should be very dog-savvy, friendly and well-behaved. Another dog that Timmy could pal around with would be wonderful, but we want that new friend's energy level and personality to match with Timmy's. A large, super playful dog could accidentally hurt Timmy. Good with cats?unknown, will not be adopted to a home with a cat Good with children?yes, OK for kids over: about 6 Activity Preference:Will go with the flow, Champion couch potato IQ:Average Timmy's favorite things:Kisses, cuddles, belly rubs, naps with his favorite humans or dog friends, squeaky toys! Timmy is good at:meeting people, meeting dogs, staying in a crate, behaving in the house, going for car rides, cuddling, playing Ideal home:another dog, quiet environment, someone at home most of the day Training Needs:potty training Health issues:Timmy is a dwarf. All four of his limbs are small and unable to bend and flex as a "normal" dog's legs. He also suffered a complete break of his front left leg at some point and it was never repaired. It was just left to heal on its own. Because of this, he basically doesn't have an elbow in that front leg. This is his most painful area and seems to be the leg that gives him the most difficulty. Timmy has seen 2 vets and an orthopedic surgeon. Surgery is not an option for Timmy. He is now under the care of a holistic vet where he receives cold laser and acupuncture therapy about 1-2 times a month on his entire body. Meet Timmy Timmy!!! What a joyful, special little boy! Timmy loves everyone! He's a social, super friendly pup! He loves to be showered with attention and affection by adoring humans! He so happy playing or cuddling with his dog friends! Timmy is the life of the party! He lights up a room! He likes to go for walks in his dog mobile and greet all his adoring fans! His expressive deep eyes will melt even the hardest of hearts! When he puts his little paw on you and gazes so lovingly right into your eyes...that's it game over! He's always interested in what's going on and is usually perched in a prime spot with ears up listening and watching the action. Timmy is wonderful company! He's the perfect size to snuggle beside you and watch a movie. Timmy's favorite shows are anything with dogs and cats! Timmy does need to be lifted to get on the couch or your lap. His new mom or dad should be comfortable lifting about 50 lbs a few times a day. Steps are impossible for Timmy, so a ramp or a home without steps would be ideal! He's only got those adorable short little legs to get around and steps just aren't in the cards. Timmy likes to play with his squeaky toys either alone or with his dog pals! He does get tired easily so he will just take a little nap when that happens. He loves to empty out the dog toy box and pick his favorites at playtime! Timmy likes to go for car rides. He likes to sit in the grass out back too! He is crate trained, knows his spot in the kitchen when it's time to eat and is right there at the door to greet you when you return home or come in from getting the mail! :) He's a fabulous little boy! So friendly! So trusting! So loving! Timmy is still working on his potty training. He's catching on, it's a work in progress! While Timmy can get around on his own around the house, he's not the dog for a very active forever home. He cannot go for walks or play for any extended time. The area he covers isn't large and he does tire quickly but after a little break he's back up for playtime again! Timmy's special needs do not require a cart. He can not use a wheelchair, since he doesn't have full use of his front legs, they could not support a wheelchair. He does perfectly fine without any devices. His forever home should know that his therapy and supplements are expected to be lifelong and be prepared for the time and financial commitment to make Timmy's life as fabulous as possible. We want anyone considering adding Timmy to their lives to be completely prepared financially, physically and emotionally. The current costs to keep him happy and moving as comfortably as possible, cost about $130.00 for each laser/acupuncture treatment (these visits are expected to be 1-2 times monthly, Hemp Forte Rx oil $200.00 a bottle for roughly 4-6 month supply, Omega-3 supplement is $26.00 a bottle, dasuquin is $50.00 for 2 1/2 month supply, ligaplex II is about $45.00 a bottle for about a 2 1/2 month supply, and Rimadyl (which we hope Timmy is almost completely off of! But, if we find he needs to stay on some dosage to keep him comfortable then that can be found at about $40-$45 for a 30 day supply. Timmy is a wonderful boy! He is an inspiration to anyone he meets! There's no bad or sad days with Timmy around! PLEASE READ: Adopters will not be considered without completing an application. Please visit www.AmericanBulldogRescue.org to apply! She has had 2 families in 2 years through no fault of her own. The last family is going through a divorce and neither of them could keep her so they surrendered her to ABR. Maggie is a bit shy to strangers at first but warms up pretty quickly once she feels comfortable she becomes very affectionate. She is living harmoniously and happily with an older male DdB and we believe she would do best in a home with just one other older male as well, we think she would prefer one well-mannered older large-breed male dog. She has lots of puppy playfulness and is affectionate often giving kisses and is always by our side. She is athletic and enjoys running around and playing in the yard with her foster family. Maggie is up to date on her shots, heart worm negative, spayed, crate and house trained and on heartworm preventative. She is not good with small or female dogs or cats, a fenced in yard and molosser experience is preferred. Young children are unknown so kids about 13 and older. Maggie has not had an ideal life in her past so we are looking for a family to show her the stability and love she deserves- a life we wish she always had, we know she is certainly looking forward to finding her forever home-finally. He could care less about other dogs....just stares at them when they bark and act like morons....Roy is in Tampa and needs an equally amazing family to love him forever! Pictures just don't show how gorgeous this boy is. He's a smart, energetic, playful, sweet and goofy and loves to give kisses. He doesn't understand why his family, that he adored, dumped him in a shelter. Roy is house/crate trained and knows sit, crate on command. Roy is a "Talker" (for attention). He tilts his head and then "talks" to you. How adorable! We love our "talkers". Some lucky person is getting a great guy. Roy is big guy and is happiest following a human, helping with housework and getting praise & attention. He'll even work out with you and carry your weights around (or steal them....lol) Roy is interviewing now..Are you his human? Meet Sarge Sarge was once very loved by his elderly veteran owner (hence his name-Sarge). Sarge's owner passed away and the family was unable to care for Sarge properly which lead to his autoimmune protein deficiency. Sarge is a smart and fun loving boy. He has enough energy for a nice walk but is happy to just be where you are. Sarge gets excited over his food and can lift his feet. He does NOT bite over his food just a bit grubby as he was so starved with the illness. We are working on manners and Sarge has learned to sit to wait for his food bowl.
