Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Hi, it's me -- Hera. Just like the Greek Goddesses', I was named for, I am a beautiful and priceless dog! I'm quite petite, at just under 6 pounds. My foster mom says I am a terrific size for anyone wanting a lap dog! I love to cuddle, hang out with my people, and enjoy the company of other friendly canines, too. I love, love toys and treats -- and of course, to be treated like royalty. If you are interested in being part of my adoring court, consider contacting the dedicated volunteers at Canine Soulmates Rescue for an opportunity to meet me. About Canine Soulmates Rescue: Our adoption fee is $250 for adults, $300 for puppies. The adoption fee includes having your dog fully vetted -- spay/neuter, vaccinations, rabies shot, heartworm testing and on monthly heartworm preventative. All dogs are microchipped, and CSR covers the cost of microchip registration for the first year. CSR adopts only to adopters in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. We require a home check for all of our adopters, and renters must have permission to add a dog to their lease agreement and have paid any necessary pet deposit. As a general rule, we do not adopt large breed dogs or puppies to apartment homes. Veterinary or personal references are checked. To start the process for exploring adoption of your new best friend, please complete a pre-adoption application at www.caninesoulmates.com. Thank you for your interest in our rescue dogs!

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Papillon / Mixed (long coat). ***Adult Female Household Only*** Kennedy is one committed little pooch. When he loves you he LOVES you big time! He can be shy at first but after he's gotten to know you he will give lots of kisses and cuddles. He has lots of energy but also is the kind of dog that will relax on your lap or next to you. We wish he could tell us why, but he is uncomfortable with and hides from/barks at some men. For that reason, we would love to find an all-female human household for him so as to avoid stress for everyone. Kennedy loves playing with other doggies and does well with cats too. Kennedy loves long walks and especially the dog park! He's also the best car rider you'll ever meet. He's very gentle with kids but has fragile little legs so needs supervision with young children. He is 2 yrs old, a beautiful Papillon mix, and is fully vetted. Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Maltese / Mixed (long coat). Say hello to Herbie, the love bug! He is a three year old York-tese, we think, with a bubbly personality and a generally sunny disposition. He left an abusive situation, so it has taken some time for him to become a "real" dog, but he loves to play with his foster siblings, and can make his little ten pound presence felt in any room. He can be a bit nervous around new people, but with someone who understands doggie boundaries this cuddly little ewok quickly warms up. He loves to snuggle right next to his people and plays well with his toys. With his difficult history, a confident owner is preferred because he doesn't want to have to be in charge. He warms up most quickly to smaller people, and women, and is good with kids who respect his boundaries. He would probably be okay on his own, but he does love to play with his “pack” so another small dog, not over 20 pounds, would be perfect for him. Posted Breed: Basenji / Mixed (short coat). Meet Buddy! Buddy is a delight to watch his playful self. He’s great with kids, adults and other dogs. He loves being the center of attention. He won’t do well locked up in a yard or home by himself all the time. He needs to be someone’s companion. He will be ok in an apartment if you take him out for adventures often or spend a lot of time with him. I can also see him being a great lap dog. I believe he will thrive in any environment with a lot of attention. He is super sweet and has lots of love to give. He is house and crate trained. He also sits nicely on command.
