If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet Gus! Gus was found cold, skinny and alone in a parking lot. He looked like he had been on the run for a quite some time. We are not sure if he was dumped or somehow separated from his owner, but all attempts at finding his owner failed. Now Gus needs a loving home to lie down his weary head. Gus is just under 8 years old and a lab mix. His foster has lovingly fattened him up and he is now healthy and doing well. Gus is a shy boy and it takes him some time to warm up to people. He likes to watch what is going on from a distance and enjoys sleeping in his warm bed or on a corner of the couch. He likes being petted but is unsure at first. Once he trusts you, he is happy with some nice ear scratches or back rubs. He gets along well with other dogs but not with cats. We think he will do best in a home without children or lots of coming and going. Gus likes things quiet and predictable. He also needs proper introduction to new people and we can provide you tips and as long as you follow them to a T, all will be well! We'd love to see this lost boy in a home once again. He is now vaccinated, neutered and ready to be loved. His adoption fee is $195, often matched by employers, so please do check! We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495. Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at www.savinggreatanimals.org and fill out an application. We look at the first applications to arrive, so we hope to hear from you soon!

Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Meet Ellie! Ellie is a gorgeous Staffie/Lab mix. She is a happy and healthy girl who loves to run, play, hike and then snuggle at your feet. Ellie is crate trained and is calm and easy around the home. She has great basic manners and good recall. She is unbelievably cute and medium in size, not very big. Ellie is good with other dogs, but can at times be territorial, so we prefer to see her in a home with no other dogs, or with a male dog her size. If it is a good match though, she will love to play and have a pal to live with. She is not good with small dogs or cats. We recommend Ellie for a home with older children (12 and up). She loves adult humans! Ellie is a great leash-walker and loves to go for long walks. She is a strong girl but does well on walks with minor corrections. At times she can bark at strangers while on a leash. When new people come to the house, Ellie needs a few minutes to 'check them out' and make sure they are good people. Ellie is an affectionate and very loyal companion. She is fixed, vaccinated and chipped. Her adoption fee is $195. We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495. Thank you for stepping up to save a life! Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Bardo! This wonderful boy was rescued from the streets in Iran. He was extremely neglected and poorly treated. Bardo has slowly been nursed back to health and is doing well, though he still has some issues with his skin at times. He is a very sweet and loving boy and needs a home where he will get all the TLC that he missed out on in his early years. Bardo is a sweetie pie, great with other dogs as well as cats. He is a sweet mannered and timid dog. He is great with smaller dogs, really likes to pal around and play. Larger dogs may cause him some jealousy. He is good with one primary master and has learned some basic commands like Sit, Shake and Lay Down. He is very comfortable in his kennel and loves to play with stuffed animals, balls and chew toys. Bardo is good with older children but young kids with unpredictable movements can make him a little anxious. He is quite timid and needs extra time to connect and build trust, then he is truly a loyal dog. Bardo loves apples! He loves to run as well. He pulls a bit on the leash so walking with a harness is better for him. He has so much love to give and wants to be your loyal companion. A more quiet home is best for him and a yard is a must. Bardo is vaccinated, chipped and neutered. His adoption fee is $295. Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A COURTESY POST. THIS DOG IS NOT WITH SAVING GREAT ANIMALS. YOU CAN SEND INQUIRIES ABOUT PEPPER TO: RAHELEH LA CROIX AT: rahelehlacroix@netscape.net Pepper is a 2.5-year-old rescue that had a very happy beginning. You can see that in her eyes from the love and affection she gives to humans and, especially children. Unfortunately, that happy beginning did not last long. She either got lost or was kidnapped or abandoned. During her wandering arounds she suffered a severe leg injury that, later on, was treated through help of a good surgeon and a group of kind people. Being a small skinny dog, she had to learn to defend herself on the streets against bigger dogs and also against not very kind people. Pepper weighs about 46lbs now, but she was around 30 when was rescued. Through efforts of a group of animal lovers, she was lucky enough to come to the US in January 2017 from 7000 miles away! She has been living with a family in Seattle who adores her, but cannot keep her. Pepper is well-behaved in the house and great with children and adults. However, any prospective owners should know that she has never been fully socialized with other dogs and thus is highly anxious and reactive around them until he gets to know them. It took her foster parent five days to get her to live, play, and be friend with two other dogs (see the attached picture). Pepper would do best with an experienced dog owner who is understanding of her needs and dedicated to meeting her unique challenges. However, her behavior toward strange dogs may not completely change over time. Pepper is responsive to training, but needs someone who can commit to work frequently and consistently with her. Dedicated time training her at home and while on walks daily would be best. According to her foster parent who is a seasoned dog owner, she is the smartest dog he has ever seen. She learns quickly and likes to have a job to do. She will repay a patient and considerate owner with sweetness, loyalty, and lots of love. Pepper is a friendly dog who is great with people. The prospective family should know that finding a dog that is as safe and sweet as Pepper is to children is not easy. She is always ready to receive petting and enjoys frequent brushing. She is always curious and interested in what is happening in the household. She is happy to greet you in the morning and when you come home. She loves going for walks, but is on-alert and anxious anticipating encounters with other dogs. Pepper would be best suited to a home that is less urban than her current home in Seattle. Leash walks in city neighborhoods pose a big challenge. In a more rural setting it's possible she may even make a good jogging companion with some training. She enjoys running around in the backyard and playing fetch. Other points in talking with interested potential adopters: 1. Pepper should stay away from dog parks. She panics around a group of dogs and becomes aggressive and she could bite them if she feels she is the leader, not her owner/walker. 2. She should not be walking with other dogs that she does not know well. 3. Pepper is too smart for regular leash. We recommend using a "Gentle Leader" when walking her and a muzzle if she may encounter other dogs. Pepper should use an Easy Walk Harness. 4. Like most other dogs, Pepper should not be left tied up anywhere (park, grocery store).

He is a sweet dog once he gets to know you, but it will take several introductions with strange dogs and people before he learns they are not a threat. He has made improvements after growly dog classes and working with a CPDT-KA Certified Dog Trainer but Fellini would benefit from additional training to continue working on his anxiety. Fellini knows sit, beg, paw, down, turn, find it, touch, release, with me, quiet and speak. He is highly food motivated and very smart, so he is always willing to learn new tricks. He enjoys walks but tends to pull on his lease so bring treats with you to get his attention. Fellini is high energy, loves toys, playing tug of war and will run circles around the room when he gets excited. He should be in a household with no children but can be with another dog after proper socialization. He likes to burrow under the covers if you let him in your bed. Once you are in his inner circle he will shower you with lots of licks. Felini is crate trained, house trained. He is vaccinated, neutered and chipped. His adoption fee is $395.
