Overview:
There are two basic types of English Setter ' bench setters which are bred for show rings, and field setters which are bred for hunting and field trial activities. Llewellin Setters are a particular strain of field setter which can trace undiluted ancestry back to the late 1800's kennel of an English nobleman named Richard Purcell Llewellin (1840-1925). Prior to that time in England, english setters were not a well standardized breed. They had for centuries been bred up from spaniel stock and could have best been described at that time as a loose collection of similar types of dogs. The first serious recorded effort to standardize a hunting english setter was undertaken in the mid-1800's by Edward Laverack (1800-1877). He had only mixed success in developing a quality hunting dog, but did succeed in developing a distinct line of dogs which are considered the progenitors of modern bench English Setters.

Lucas Terrier
Weight (lbs): | 11-20 |
Height (in): | 9-12 |
Colors: | The Lucas Terrier occurs in two color varieties. The Irwin type (named for Jane Irwin) is a predominately white dog with markings in the color of any shade of tan, black, badger-gray, black and tan, or black and badger-gray. Solid white dogs are also acceptable. The Frost type (named for Jumbo Frost) occurs in any shade of tan and may have white markings on the chest, underside, legs, feet, muzzle, and neck. A saddle of black or bluish gray may also occur on the Frost type. |
Overview:
The Lucas Terrier was originally developed by Sir Jocelyn Lucas for the ability to work in a small pack, chasing game out of heavy cover. The breed was never meant to serve as an earth dog and consequently never did. Although some Lucas Terriers are still used for this role, the majority of the breed has instead turned to that of household companion. The Lucas Terrier Club has even begun to promote the Lucas Terrier as a companion breed, and not a working one, because of more and more laws against hunting in the United Kingdom. As a companion, the breed does well in that they are decidedly non-dog aggressive and people friendly. Other good marks for the breed include the fact that they are not very noisy and adapt readily to any situation.
