    Jake

    Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Meet Jake! This young, handsome boy was bought as a cute and cuddly puppy, but as he grew, his family lost interest, and started keeping outside in the backyard, or in a crate in their garage. That's no life for a young, social, active Lab like Jake who is super affectionate. The family had young kids and said they were too busy to care for a dog and planned to turn him into the shelter. Thankfully, our SC team intervened and this sweet boy is now in a local foster home giving the love and care he deserves. FOSTER UPDATE Jake has now been fully integrated with the two large adult dogs in his foster home, and does well with both. He loves to play with them in the yard and romp around. He is learning doggy manners, how to be respectful and share toys and bones, and his two elders will correct him if he steps out of line. Jake has still not been fully introduced to Zip the cat, but coming soon. This handsome boy is a young, active Lab, and still pretty puppy like at only 8 to 10 months old. His foster mom has been working on his leash walking skills every day, walking him around the yard and down the road to get used to leash walking. He's steadily improving, but not perfect yet...It's a process. Like most young dogs, he gets excited when he meets new people, and will sometimes jump up or be mouthy. He's learning that's a no-no, and how to greet people properly. Jake is crate trained, and sleeps in his crate at night. He's potty-trained and has had no accidents in his foster home. He's learning basic commands like "sit" and doing well with focus. He craves attention and being petted and is a very sweet, affectionate dog. He met the foster's grandkids yesterday (6 years old and 9 years old), and did well with both. He was respectful and not over excited around them, but did want to sit on their laps and give many kisses. Jake was so happy to see the grandkids and his entire demeanor changed to joyful around them. Jake's former family had 5 kids, so he's grown up around them. This young handsome boy has a great demeanor, and will make an excellent family dog. Like all dogs this age, he needs some structure and consistency of routine to learn the rules of your home. JAKE UPDATE Jake was adopted in adopted in early May, but sadly he has not yet found his forever home. His family feels that he would do better in a home with another dog, or an active family with a more flexible schedule. He started getting anxious when his mom went back to work, and was left alone for longer periods of time. Jake was fostered in homes where both parents worked, and was crated during the day, but there were other dogs in the home to keep him company. Jake has been living as an only dog with a young teen girl in the home, and is family reports that he is friendly with people of all ages, and loves other dogs. He really enjoys the dog park and doggy play dates, and we have never seen him have a bad reaction to another dog. He is very smart, and has been to some basic obedience classes. He knows several commands and learns quickly. He would be an ideal dog for someone interested in doing further training or an agility class. He would love it and excel. Jake is completely housebroken and generally well behaved around the house. He’s still a young dog, so he might occasionally try to chew something inappropriate, but it’s not a big issue. He is happy walking on a leash, does not have any skittishness to noises, and greets other people and dogs well on leash. He has a lot of energy, so he needs an active home that will give him the exercise and playtime he needs. FOSTER UPDATE - August Jake has been in his foster home for 2 weeks and is doing really well. He loves having a dog buddy to romp and play with, and his foster parents did a training session to help improve his leash manners and basic obedience. He's such a smart dog, and learns quickly. Jake is not a fan of the crate, and needs someone to gradually re-introduce the crate and build a positive association to it. He will sleep in the crate at night near you, but doesn't like being left alone in the crate. His foster parents have left him home alone with their dog, Koda, for company, and he was fine - no issues or over excitement. If his new family has a room or floor level where he will be contained, and a dog for company, Jake does well being left alone when he has some freedom to move around, and a companion. Jake needs a family who will be committed to establishing a routine and maintaining it. Calm greetings, quiet and centered energy is an absolute must with Jake. Consistent and repeated routine and daily exercise can not be stressed enough with any higher energy dog. Long quiet walks, mixed in playtime and fetch with chew toys such as antlers has worked well when he needs to calm down or wear out his energy. Jake is still an adolescent maturing out of puppy mode. His fosters, Don & Penny, are really enjoying Jake's company. His foster mom Penny says she loves playing fetch with him because he will retrieve and drop on command, and is really a smart dog. He's also a great buddy to their family dog, Koda, and will make an excellent 2nd dog companion. Jake is an awesome dog, and deserves a committed, loving family. TRAINING UPDATE - 10/3/18 UPDATE! Jake just completed 3 weeks of onsite training with our favorite trainers at Blue Ridge Canine. They worked with him on crate training so that he associates the crate as his safe place when he's left alone. They also worked with him on basic obedience and leash skills. He knows “sit,” “down,” and “come,” and walks well on leash. Jake is a very good-natured boy who loves kids and is great with other dogs. He would love to have a dog buddy to play with, or a fenced yard to romp in. He will also make a great jogging or biking partner. Because he's a rough and tumble player, he's not a good fit for a home with cats. He really enjoys playing with kids, but may be too much for toddlers and infants. Kids 7+ years and older would be best. Jake is an active, adolescent Lab at only a year old, and will need an owner committed to his daily exercise and ideally continued training to expand upon the commands he has learned, and help build a healthy and productive relationship with his new family. Whoever adopts Jake is going to be getting a dog fresh out of professional obedience training, ready to transition to his new home. If you are looking for an active young Lab, look no more! He needs an active, structured home, and a family who will play with him and give him plenty of fun toys to chew on. Could you be Jake's forever home? Apply today for this handsome, sweet boy today. Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Oliver. This adorable little guy had a rough start in life, but is in a much better place today. He has a natural charm and sweetness, and finally has someone to teach him manners and show him how to be part of a family. Oliver was rescued as a puppy (4-5 months old) by a Good Samaritan who saw him in a car at the grocery store. It was a hot day, he was alone, and he looked pitiful; emaciated with very little fur. The windows were down, so she started talking to him and he wiggled with joy. His owners returned and told her they were on their way to euthanize him, saying he had been "nothing, but trouble since he was born." They said he was born deformed (he has an overbite) and had skin issues. He had mange that had gone untreated, as they could not afford his vet care. The Good Samaritan asked if she could take him, and they gave him up without a second thought. Oliver stayed with her for many months, but was too much for her to handle with 6 other pets in her home and some health limitations of her own. She worked a 12-hour day and he was crated for very long hours, and he didn’t get the exercise, training, or socialization a young puppy needs. She tried to find a local rescue to take him, but rescues in the area are overwhelmed with dogs, and especially Pit pups, and are not quick to step up for a dog who also requires medical treatment. When Worthy Dog heard Oliver’s story, we really wanted to help and took him in. The first thing we did was take Oliver to the vet to have his skin treated, and today his skin and coat look great. He’s on a grain-free diet of high quality food, taking allergy meds, and he looks fabulous. He also had a few behavioral issues that needed to be addressed. Oliver survived being both starved and over-crated, and had learned to protect and guard his food and his crate around other dogs and humans. He was never told it was wrong, and needed someone with patience and leadership skills to show him the way. He’s still very much a puppy who needs to learn manners. Thankfully, we knew where to go to get Oliver help. Linda, a trainer we work with regularly who also runs the prison dog training program in MD is currently fostering him. Because the prison program does not allow Pits, she often personally takes on cases like this and will board and train a dog in her own home. Oliver is one lucky pup to be in her care, and he’s come a very long way in a short time. She started hand feeding him on day one to gain his trust around food, has worked on basic commands and recall, and is now working on his leash skills. Linda offers this update: “Oliver is a love bug. He is a friendly, affectionate little fellow and my pack likes him. He craves affection but can be a bit demanding, but he's still learning proper manners and social skills. Because will revert to some mild mouthing when he wants your attention, I would not put him in a home with children under 10. He plays very well with other dogs, but I always feed him separately because a resource guarder of the food bowl will almost always guard it from other dogs. He can be in a home with other dogs, but would need his own secure space for feeding and special treats. He has really improved on the food guarding front. I can now stand next to him when he eats, or place a water bowl down with no issues. I may even get a tail wag. Anyone who adopts Oliver will have to establish food bowl parameters with him as I did. They will begin by hand feeding and move on from there. It will move more quickly for them then the initial training I did with him. They must be mindful that he can get it in his head that an object is to be coveted, so they must be prepared to handle it without causing reaction. There is no pattern or specific thing he focuses on…one time it was a flower pot. The good news is he backs down when you correct him. Oliver’s house training is solid. He has a good sit, great recall inside the yard, and we are working on down and wait right now. He has mastered touch and has good focus. We are still working on his leash skills, but he’s better than when he came. He is very excited to interact with people and other dogs. He does lunge a bit, but it is not aggression. He has a high prey drive, so he’s not a great fit for a home with cats. Oliver goes into his crate voluntarily now, but I do not keep him crated during the day and he has not bothered anything in my home. Since he was over-crated, we’ve been working to make the crate a more positive experience. He has a bit of barrier aggression when he is closed in the crate. It’s not horrible and as soon as you open the door he is fine. On the positive side, he sleeps in the crate now by choice. Oliver has had a pretty crappy life up until now and is learning to trust and follow direction. That will continue if his new family loves him and encourages him in the right direction. Oliver absolutely adores my son who is a tall, bearded fellow, soft spoken and calm. He and Oliver play and Oliver gets over the top excited when he hears his bike pull up the driveway. He’s a very loving dog who will make someone a great companion. Oliver loves the yard, with or without company. A fenced yard would make Oliver very happy. He loves to pace the perimeter and bark at anything out of the ordinary that he sees. He is a fabulous watchdog.” Oliver has only been with Linda a little over a month, and he’s doing so well with his training. We are so happy for him, and excited to see a joyful, more trusting pup emerging. Apply today! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Rex. This guy landed in an overcrowded shelter in a rural part of SC because his owners could no longer care for him. He stood very little chance of being adopted in SC because there are significantly less homes than homeless dogs. Rex is described as a friendly guy. He is the classic older lab. He gets along with all dogs and is friendly with people. He's the couch potato who is looking for a soft spot to rest and enjoy some of the finer things in life, such as a soft dog bed, regular walks around the neighborhood and snuggling with his new family. He is described by shelter staff as congenial, mannerly and polite. He also doesn't respond to cats. What more could anyone ask for in a dog? If you are looking for an adult dog who gets along with everyone, this might be the guy for you. Rex is ready and waiting for you. If you are interested in him, please do apply now. TJ - ADOPTIO...

    Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier) / Mixed (short coat). TJ and his buddy, Lily, were rescued together from a hoarder’s home. They were the youngest dogs on the property, and were fortunate to live inside with their owner most of their lives, while other dogs were kept outside in a wood shed in the backyard. There was rarely fresh water or AC as the outside dogs suffered through the heat of SC summer, and lived in filth. Our team was able to rescue 16 other dogs from that property over the years, and paid for Lily to be spayed, but were not able to get their owner to surrender them to rescue. Finally, when the owner went into assisted living, TJ and Lily were moved to an outside pen until the owner’s son decided to surrender them to Worthy Dog. We are thankful he did right by the dogs, and gave them a second chance at a better life. TJ spent a few weeks in a SC foster home before coming to N. VA. He was initially timid, but has come out of his shell and loves family life. He was fostered in a home with two 13-year-old boys, a Lab, and a cat. TJ and the Lab were respectful of each other, but not best buddies, and he was afraid of the cat so learned to keep his distance. TJ is very much a people-oriented dog, and was great with the two boys. He followed his foster mom everywhere and was always in her lap or lying next to her. FOSTER UPDATE - 10/1/18 TJ’s is currently being fostered in the city with 2 other small dogs. His foster parents shared this update: "He started off pretty timid the first few days, but has settled in nicely now. He gets along great with our other dog (Taqo), managed to jump over the baby gate to hang out with her when we left him alone. He's had free roam ever since. He is not destructive at all, and has done pretty well with potty training. He's not a fan of the crate, but we are working on introducing it slowly to him. TJ is a total lapdog. He's pretty good on walks and likes going out to explore. He has a playful side, but is not overactive or hyper. He's definitely excited to see you when you come home, and seems to find comfort in having other dogs in the home. He’s really taken to Taqo, and even attempts to groom her! He likes to cuddle up to her every chance he gets. We feel the ideal home for TJ would be a family with a flexible schedule to spend time with him or another dog in the home. He would do best in a calm home with older kids, and he does have some escape artist tendencies at the front door, so a house with young kids is not ideal. This cute little guy is has a very good nature, and is ready to blossom with the love of a good, stable home and family. FOSTER UPDATE - 10/14/18 TJ’s doing well! Now that he's settled in and trusts, he doesn’t try to escape anymore, especially if I give him a treat before I leave. He hasn’t had any accidents in the home, he gets along well with our two pups, Taqo and Matilda, and even does well when they’re not around being an only dog. He's earned free roam privileges in our home, and we trust him. He walks fine on leash, no major issues. He still pulls a little when he's excited, but it's not bad. He's more of a laid back energy, but can get riled up for play. He’s the easiest pup we've fostered thus far! Apply today! Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Mixed (long coat). NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Finn was surrendered to rescue by his owner who could not afford his care. Finn had an eye injury that went untreated and caused an ulcer in his left eye that was painful and required removal. Initially, our vet thought he might have genetic glaucoma, but then realized it could be injury related. He encouraged us to go to specialist to get him assessed, and check the eye pressure on his good eye. Finn had eye surgery on his injured eye in early Sept, and is already back to his bouncy, busy self. Finn is being fostered with 2 larger dogs and gets along great with both. His foster mom, Donna, says "Finn has the BEST personality! We just love him! He is very playful, and loves to chase our dogs around the yard. He loves my 2 teens, and I think he would be a good fit with kids. He loves to be pet, but is not a lap dog. He's content to lay near or next to you on the floor, or hang out in his comfy dog bed. He's affectionate, but not clingy. We think he would prefer to have a dog buddy in his home." Donna describes Finn as a medium energy level dog who is pretty social and confident, but also has a gentle, submissive nature. He's playful, but also does well in his crate at night, and sleeps silently through the night. He's very good about going outside to potty, but can be resistant to the rain. Finn is fully recovered, very aware of everything going on, and has no issues navigating, playing, running or being a normal dog. He's a happy dog who will be a great addition to most families. MEDICAL UPDATE - 10/1/18 Great news! Finn went to the Opthamologist today and they determined that he does NOT have glaucoma in his healthy eye. His remaining eye is healthy, and has a very good pressure. They did suggest he see an ophthalmologist in 6 months just to make sure it's still on track and stays healthy, but since the eye that was removed was believed to be injury related, there is no reason to think there will be any residual issues with his remaining eye. Posted Breed: Terrier. NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!! Adorable Benny comes to Worthy Dog Rescue all the way from Korea. Benny’s foster mom is Korean, and recently adopted her family dog from there. In the process, she learned that there are so many dogs in need, but they don’t have a large rescue community to help these dogs find homes. She asked if she could foster and help save dogs from Korea, as well as the US, and we were completely on board. Benny has been in the US a little over a week now and has quickly settled into his foster home. He’s being fostered with another dog, and 2 girls (10 and 14 years old). Benny is more people oriented than dog-oriented, but he gets along great with the family dog. Another dog in the home will definitely help him to settle in quickly, but he will do fine as an only dog as long as he has someone to play with. His energy level is medium. He spurts and romps around the yard, but is also happy to hang out near you. When you are sitting on a chair, he will lay down under your feet. When you are on a couch, he will be on your side. He craves attention and being petted. Benny has been good with the 2 girls in the home. Only on the second day, he barked at the 10 year old when she made sudden moves and screamed. It didn't happen again afterwards, but we think the family with older kids would be a better fit for him. He is shy to new people, and may bark when they first get close, but with gentle words and movements, he will settle in. He is affectionate and wants to stay close to you. He lets his foster mom clean his ears and teeth with no issue. Leash walking was new to Benny and he’s learning. He’s been good on the leash in general, but is fearful/reactive toward bicycles and runners. His fosters have been redirecting him by blocking and giving treats, and gradually giving him more exposure. Everything is very new to him, and he’s still setting in. He’s been great on potty training. He was pee pad trained in Korea, but prefers to go outside. He had some marking the first day but has not had an accident since. Benny’s foster mom is working with Benny on crate training. The do not use crates in a Korea, so he’s not a fan, but he is improving. He has been getting his food and treats in the crate, and is gradually building a positive association to it. They are doing small increments of time for him in the crate with the door closed and giving him time to adjust. Benny is an affectionate pup and loves to play with the family dog. Benny’s foster mom enjoys watching them romping around the yard. He sleeps with the family dog on the first floor at night, and is not yet good being left alone. Another dog in the home would be a better fit for benny. Benny had much of his standard vet care done in Korea, and the US has strict standard in place to bring a dog to the US. He has also seen our local vet, and was given a clean bill of health. This young adorable pup is going to make a great addition to some lucky family. Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix

    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet Wrigley. He was given away by his family on Craigslist to a man who wanted him to hunt. He was soon "fired" from his job because his owner didn't think he was cut out to be a hunting dog and since he wouldn't "earn his keep", he landed in a very overcrowded shelter. He has very little chance of finding a home in SC and so Worthy Dog would love to help him find a forever family. In order to do so, we need a foster or adopter willing to take him in. If you are able to help, please do apply. Wrigley is reported to be a happy, goofy guy who gets along with others. He is super smart and willing to please. He'll make a good companion for someone who would enjoy hiking or walks around their neighborhood. Wrigley feels he would be a good fit in any home, his only request being that someone not expect him to hunt. He's just not the guy who wants to hunt. Due to his young age, he would benefit from some obedience training, as most young dogs do. Please do apply today to foster or adopt Wrigley. He's hoping for a miracle and you can help make that wish come true. UPDATE 10/15/18 Wrigley arrived 2 days ago, and is settling into nicely to his local foster home. He's being fostered as an only dog, but has 2 kids in the home to play with. More to come on Wrigley as he settles in. Breed: Pointer mix Age: 1 year Size: 40 lbs Vetting: Up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, dewormed. Adoption Fee: $350 Location: Fairfax, VA FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to adopt.worthydog and complete the application.
