    Casey

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Casey's dad adopted her when she was only 6 weeks old, and she's had only one home and owner her whole life. Her owner was an older gentleman who lived in an apartment and worked long hours (12 hours a day), which is not a good life for any dog, much less a young puppy. He loved Casey, but knew he was not giving her the life she deserved and reached out to Worthy Dog to help find her the right home. Casey is a cuddly, affectionate, and submissive Boxer mix who is still just a puppy discovering the world around her. She absolutely loves people, wants to be connected with you, and considers herself a lapdog. When you meet Casey she will try to crawl in your lap and then roll over on her back in total submission, hoping for an extended belly rub. She’s lived as an only dog, but is interested and curious about other dogs, so a young, playful pup would be good match for her, but she would be fine as an only dog too. She is very focused on being with her person, and is eager to please. Casey grew up in a condo and was leash walked for potty breaks every day. She still has puppy energy, and needs room to run around, and a more active home. She's crate trained and never has accidents in her crate. She's almost fully housetrained, but her fosters don't yet give her full trust or free roam of the home. She gets daily walks, and at least 3 potty breaks a day, and has had no accidents in her foster home. She walks OK on leash, but will sometimes still pull. She has not been barky at other dogs. Her owner described Casey as a friendly dog who is warm to new people, and that's completely accurate. On transport day she was all kisses and wiggles for every person she met and enjoys when visitors come to her home. Casey deserves someone who will love her, has time to spend with her, and will introduce her to an active, fun life. She's an playful dog who’s barely out of puppy stage, and needs an owner who is committed to her daily exercise and playtime and will continue her basic training. She is very intelligent and learns fast. She would be great with kids 7+. She gets excited and will jump, but that is typical for a dog her age and can be easily corrected with training. Casey is going to make some lucky family an incredible companion. Posted Breed: Beagle / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please welcome Petey to Worthy Dog Rescue. Petey was a family dog when he was a puppy, but now that he’s grown and his family has a third new baby, they no longer wanted him inside the home. They started keeping him in a 10 x 10 pen all day long in the extreme heat of SC summer. Thankfully, someone reached out to Worthy Dog to help this sweet boy, and he will be going to a foster home soon. He’s a very sweet and social pup who has grown up with kids, and loves other dogs. No cats. He's crate trained and house trained. We don't know about his leash skills yet, but will know more once he settles into his new foster home. Updates to follow. 8/5/18 - Petey arrived on trasnport and was calm and social meeting all the new people and other dogs. He's doing well with the smaller scruffy terrier in his foster home, and has great doggy manners. He's a social pup who greets new people well, he's also a young, very active dog who needs his daily exercise and playtime. His foster dad is arranging neighborhood play dates for Petey, and he would do best with another young dog to romp around with in his new home. Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Look at this adorable pup! This sweet girl was recently rescued from being tied up to a tree after her family abandoned her in a trailer park. A new tenant moved in, and fortunately fed Ruthie on occasion to keep her alive, but she’s been living these past few months in a small dirt patch with only a few feet of movement and an old plastic crate for coverage. When her rescuer arrived to free her, Ruthie lit up with excitement, and was all zoomies and kisses celebrating her new found freedom and so happy to have human attention. We think she knew her life was about to change. Ruthie has been in her foster home a few days now and is doing really well. She sleeps in her crate all night in her foster mom's bedroom, and has only had a few accidents as she adjusts to her new home life. She's being fostered with multiple other dogs and is allowed free roam of the house with them when her foster mom is home. Ruthie's foster mom says she’s a very sweet lovable dog who loves to give kisses, and is very happy and playful. She seems very well-adjusted considering the life she came from, so we suspect she was an inside, family dog at some point. Ruthie arrived on Sat and was a little nervous around all the people and commotion. Transport day is a lot to take in for most dogs, and she's still adjusting to her new life. She was friendly, but shy, and is settling into her foster home with 2 other pups to keep her company. More to come on Ruthie as she settles in. Sadie

    rescue
    Breed: Beagle-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Beagle / Mixed. Sweet Sadie was recently rescued from a very lonely existence, confined to a filthy pen. Thankfully, her former owner called our SC team to surrender her, saying he was too old to deal with her. He would walk Sadie around his house sometimes and said he was afraid he would fall. This was an odd case in that Sadie’s home and yard were well maintained, but her filthy pen was hidden behind a shed away from public view. Our volunteer asked him why he wouldn't let her just run freely around the fenced back yard to have exercise. He said there was a gap in the fence where a drainage pipe was, but instead of fixing it, he kept this poor girl penned and living in filth. She had no food or clean water when our volunteers rescued her and was starved for attention. That life is well behind Miss Sadie now. She’s been living in a foster home for 3 weeks, and is acclimating well. She’s being fostered with 2 other dogs and two cats. At first she was defensive around the family dogs, and wanted to chase the cats, but her foster mom did a gradual introduction and she’s doing great with them now and does not need supervision. This was a big transition for Sadie, going from almost total isolation to an active home, and we expect any dog coming from her situation to have some fear and uncertainty going into a new environment. That's why foster homes are so important, they give the pups a chance to decompress and acclimate to home life before they meet their new family. Sadie is doing remarkably well, and she is a very sweet, good-natured dog who now enjoys playing with all of her new friends. At first, Sadie was reserved around her foster family, but she is starting to open up and realize life is good. Her foster mom says that Sadie wants to be a lap dog and will come to you happily, but is still a little restless indoors. It takes time, and Sadie is learning to trust this new life. She’s housetrained and crate trained, and sleeps in her crate at night. She really enjoys romping and exploring in her foster mom’s backyard and loves laying in the sunshine. She's turning into quite the playful pup, and this sweet girl finally has some freedom and is no longer hidden away. FOSTER UPDATE Our sweet Sadie has been in her foster home almost 6 weeks now and has really come out of her shell! She's doing great with the other pup, Phoebe, in the home. We feel having Phoebe in the home has really sped up her socialization, she is much more likely to enter a room if Phoebe is there, and really follows her lead. A confident dog buddy would be idea for this sweet girl. She needs to be properly introduced to other dogs, but is very warm and fond of them once she meets them. Sadie had some initial resistance to the crate and being confined, which is understandable. Her foster mom, Maggie, has gated off an area for her with a window and access to the crate, and she's doing well when left alone. Maggie reports: "Sadie is fairly timid about new things, but then quickly acclimates. She froze in terror at the site of a child on a bike in the woods, just stared and cried. We ended up picking her up and moving to the side. But then 4 days later we are on the street and a bike passes and she could not have cared less. Her triggers are hard to figure out. Anyone should expect her to be afraid of loud inside things (ovens, dishwashers, televisions...) but she isn't afraid of too many outside sounds (branches snapping etc) and gets accustomed to things fairly quickly. She does still get nervous quickly. Once she jumped up and was wagging her tail furiously at the sight of my mom coming home from work. But as my mom approached and raised an arm to take off a shoulder bag, froze in terror. My mom approached and she got excited again, but there are still a lot of triggers. Her reaction is mostly to freeze. Leash skills are still a work in progress. She pulls a bit, and definitely tries to slip a leash. Harness is a must. But with the properly tightened harness she really enjoys her walks. She came to us with no leash walking skills and would just freeze. Now she is much more aware she is going on a walk with you, will keep up....dramatic improvement. Potty training, she's about there now, but she is pretty tightly monitored most of the time and has never peed or pooped in her area. She's into a routine now and things are much smoother. Routine is definitely the key though, and it just took some time. She is also slimming down and just getting better at things like jumping onto the couch or bed, which the first couple weeks were very difficult for her and took a few attempts. She will sit next to me not just because she is currently being pet, but just to be close. She crosses the kitchen much more boldly, though so she still won't hang out there voluntarily. Overall, things are going really well." FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 6/14/18 "Sadies is doing so well, she is definitely ready be part of a family these days. She has gone from never not pacing in our presence to curling up deliberately under my arm all the time. She is still afraid of a lot of indoor stimuli, and kids on bikes, but is getting braver and loves being part of a group. My sisters 2 year old dog came home and Sadie wasn't a fan at first, but now they are best friends who play constantly. She has been good with the other dogs, her leash manners have improved exponentially. She mostly sits on command and at least understands I want her attention when I try to call her. When she first got here I don't think she had any conception that human voices could be relevant to her. She is slimming down and is just blossoming." FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 8/8/18 Sadie's foster mom is on travel for almost 2 weeks, so Sadie has been staying with a temp foster family in Arlington, VA. It's a great opportunity for us to see how far she comes, and how she adapts to change and a new environment. She's currently being fostered as an only dog, and has a foster mom, Amy, and foster grandma who are home a lot and have a flexible schedule. Amy reports... "Sadie was shy her first day or so here, but she quickly warmed up to us. She is a very mellow, respectful gal. I had clutter piles from unpacking after a long trip, and she didn’t disturb anything. No accidents in the house; and she gives my 92-year-old mom a wide berth, so she doesn’t trip. Sadie doesn’t attempt to get on the bed or other furniture. After a few nights in her crate, she now sleeps in my room in a doggie bed and sleeps through the night. She greets visitors calmly; no barking, dancing or jumping. I’ve not seen any aggression at all in her. A couple of times, when I needed her to move, and she didn’t understand what I wanted, I could pick her up and move her without any resistance. When I leave for errands, she goes up to her spot in the upstairs hallway without any fuss. Her leash skills are good. She understands “leave it” and will disengage and keep walking. She is friendly to people and other dogs on the bike trail. Joggers, bicyclists, etc., do not phase her. If I didn’t travel so much for work, this would be a foster fail." Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Hound / Mixed (short coat). Mabel is a snuggly, loveable family dog who has been raised around young children. Sadly, she ended up in rescue after her parents got divorced and her mom could no longer afford her care. She’s being fostered in a home with two young girls, 9 and 11, and follows them everywhere. She whines when they are not around, and lights up when they come home. She loves to curl up on the floor, bed, or couch with them, and likes being part of a pack. She’s good with other dogs, and lived with a tiny Chihuahua in her prior home. Her foster mom is making sure she gets regular playdates with the neighbor dog to keep her social, and daily walks to help her trim down. Mabel’s energy level depends on the activity at hand. Out in the yard, she loves to play fetch and chase the Frisbee or soccer ball. Inside, when you are reading or watching TV, you’ll find her sleeping on the couch curled up with one of the kids. She housetrained and crate trained, and her foster mom is teaching her to ring a bell to let her people know she needs to go out. She’s still working on her leash walking skills, and walks better with a harness. We are happy to report that daily walks and playtime are helping Mabel lose weight and she’s gaining energy daily. This sweet girl has only been in her foster home about a week, so she’s still settling in. She is a little timid around new people and animals at first, but will warm up quickly. Mabel is extremely snuggly and wants to be around her family all the time. Currently her foster mom is mostly home during the day, so she has a lot of company. At night, she sleeps in her crate with the door open, and they crate her when no one is home just to make sure she stays acclimated. More to come on this lovable pup as she settles in. Sully - ADOP...

    Breed: Border Collie
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Border Collie (long coat). Meet Sully. This gorgeous Border Collie mix was rescued as a stray running around in a rural area. We don’t know if he escaped or was abandoned by his family, but he is very people-oriented and loves kids. Like many strays and outdoor dogs who have not been given proper vet care, Sully came into the rescue heartworm positive. He has already been successfully treated for heartworm, and as a young, active dog is happy to be back in action and able to run and play freely again. Sully is currently being fostered with two senior Beagles and lives on a lake. We’ve discovered his love of water, and he’s had lots of exposure to the toddler grandkids who visit regularly. He is very gentle and patient with kids and will let them throw his ball, and he likes to fetch and retrieve for them. He’s been very respectful with the two other senior pups in his foster home and understands appropriate play. Sully does well with calm dogs but does need a proper introduction. He can be overly excited while on leash and does better meeting a new dog in a calm environment. We think another dog in the home would be best for him because he gets anxious when left completely alone, but has been fine staying in the home with other dogs. Sully is housetrained and crate trained, but is not a huge fan of the crate. His current foster family is not using the crate because they trust him in the home, and he’s never been destructive. They are both retired and home most of the time, but he has been left alone for 4 to 5 hours without issue, so a family with a more flexible schedule would be the best fit for this handsome boy. He’s a very affectionate dog who likes to stay close by your side. If you are watching TV he will sit right next to you on the couch, and at night, if allowed, he will cuddle up with you in bed. Border Collies by nature are a herding breed, and very athletic, energetic, and intelligent. Sully is a young, active dog who needs a family who will be committed to daily exercise and mental stimulation. He is not the type of dog who does well lounging in a condo while you work all day. He needs more engagement and activity to be happy. Border Collies are highly trainable and intelligent dogs who tend to excel in canine sports, including obedience, agility, tracking, and frisbee competitions. A family with some herding breed experience is preferred. Sully is a very social dog who loves and seeks out human attention. He’s been temperament tested by a trainer and passed with flying colors. He has no toy or food aggression, eats treats around other dogs, ignores treats while other dogs eat, and does not interfere. He’s very playful and respectful of boundaries. He would benefit from some basic obedience training when it comes to manners and leash walking. He loves meeting new people but still needs to learn not to jump when he greets you. He walks pretty well on leash until he sees a critter that he wants to chase, or another dog who he wants to meet, and then barks and pulls. This handsome boy will be coming to N. VA in early July, and is ready to start his new life. If you have some herding breed experience, and are ready for a smart, active, social dog, Sully could be the right pup for you! She is a very social little pup...good with dogs, kids, and cats too. Her former owner dropped her off at the pet sitter one day and never came back to claim her. Poor sweet girl! Breed: Chipin
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). This little guy is Graham! Graham was found as a stray on Graham Street at a local Memphis high school when he wandered up to a student gardening club and was lured to safety with cheese. When nobody claimed this little guy, so Worthy Dog Rescue stepped up to take him, and he's coming to the DC area! Added perk - he’s great in the car! Graham is a lover. His energy level is pretty mellow - he likes going for walks but once back home he is all about finding a soft spot to settle down and observe his surroundings while the humans are doing their human-things. If someone is sitting on the floor or couch, he is quite cuddly and will curl up close for snuggles. Because he’s people-focused, Graham is a very polite walker. He does enjoy sniffing (and a bit of marking, as male dogs do) but is always quick to return to your side and keep pace. If you stop at a corner or to chat with someone, he will either stand next to you patiently or sniff some grass here and there. He doesn’t bark or pull, and is allowed to sniff a little more freely since he’s so well-behaved. Seeing other dogs from a distance while on walks he will look at them but is mostly apathetic - no pulling or barking. Yesterday he met a Corgi up close and did fine - seemed tentative but relaxed overall. In his foster home, Graham sleeps in his crate at night and is crated during the day when his foster mom is out of the home. He may whine a little in the beginning when you first leave him in the crate, but as he becomes more confident and familiar with his new home, he’ll settle in even faster. He hasn't had any accidents in his foster home but, like any new dog, will need to become familiar with the routines at his new place. Graham loves people and gets very excited when new visitors drop. He can be a bit wiggly and will put his front paws on you, but is quick to get down with a correction. It’s all in an attempt to snuggle! His “formal” training is lacking - i.e. he doesn’t know how to sit or respond to specific verbal commands - but his personality is very people-pleasing so he can almost figure out exactly what you want with just a gentle verbal warning. Once he has a little proper training under his belt he’ll be even more fantastic! He has been coexisting in his foster home with another dog, and an adult cat and seems politely interested in her, but is also willing to completely ignore the kitty and follow his humans. With the proper introductions, he would do fine in a home with cats! Graham does well with the other dog, Mochi, who is quite energetic and playful, and they got along pretty well straight off. They eat from the same food and water bowl and switch toys and bones back and forth and all has been well Initially, Graham was more tentative than confident, but once he settles in and feels secure he's very happy and excited to get attention and meet new people. He might be a little nervous around a bigger dog, but if the dog is calm and not rough with him, he'll be fine. . BREED ESTIMATE: Min Pin or Chi mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 12.5 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~1.5 to 2 years COAT TYPE: short coat ADOPTION FEE: $350 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Alexandria, VA FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to http://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. When the owner decided to surrender Flower to a local shelter, one of our the neighbors contacted Worthy Dog to take her in. Flower is currently being fostered in a home with 2 young girls, 9 and 11 years old, and is very sweet and gentle with them. She has a moderate energy level, and is good with other dogs. She's about 5 to 7 lbs overweight, and has not had the proper exercise or diet a young dog needs. We look forward to seeing a trimmer Flower in the near future. Flower has excellent people and dog skills, and is accepting of cats too. She is the dog you can take anywhere with you. She's great on leash, in a car, would work well in a condo, or and make a great family dog too. She really fits well in most situations, and just wants a family to love and nurture her. She's a sweet soul and is going to be such a great companion to her new family. Flower needs an owner who will watch her diet and be committed to walks to help her get to her thinner, healthier self. She's an awesome dog -great house manners, potty trained, walks well on leash, good with kids. Not a fan of the crate, but will adapt. Apply today. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). Ryker is only 3 months old, but has an eventful life. He was brought to the vet by his owners in critical care, his throat was so swollen he was unable to breathe. He had been in distress for days, and they wanted to euthanize him. Thankfully, one of our local volunteers was working intake, and with our vet's help convinced the family to surrender Ryker and give him a chance at life. He had to be sedated and intubated, and required 24-hour hospitalization to keep him breathing while waiting for the swelling to go down. . The initial assessment from the emergency hospital was that Ryker had an abscess in the back of his throat from ingesting a stick or some foreign object, and they confirmed it was swollen to the point he couldn’t breathe. X-rays showed rocks and other debris in his stomach, and his belly was distended and full of worms. This morning we received update that he is breathing on his own and is being treated with antibiotics. After 2 days, Ryker was released from emergency care and is back with our vet for a few days of monitoring before he’s released to his foster home. His larynx is still ulcerated, necrotic, and unstable, and he could require surgery down the road. The doctor says it looks like one big ulcer, and must be so sore. They are hoping that antibiotics and steroids will do the trick, but we won’t know until we’ve had time to see if the meds are working. The good news is he’s a resilient little guy and a sweet, good nature soul. He’s up and eating, and wants to be his playful puppy self, but excitement and movement make him cough and further irritates his larynx, so he needs to be contained for the short term. He loves people and is very calm around other dogs and has good doggy social skills. 8/5/18 - Ryker’s hospital bill was $984 and he will need additional monitoring and support over the next week if you can spare a few dollars to help with his treatment, we would be very grateful. worthydog.org/donate We are monitoring Ryker and he will get the best care until he's ready to go home. The doctors feels he will make a full recovery from, but it may take a little time. Updates to come.
