  • American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix Dog For Adoption in Arlington, VA, USA

    Freddie

    rescue
    Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). In November, we were contacted by CVETS Columbia Veterinary Emergency Trauma and Specialty, an emergency animal hospital, who was taking in a chained dog and needed a rescue to commit to him. One of the CVETS staff members saw Freddie chained to a post with no food or water, no shelter, and living amongst garbage. He was emaciated, suffering from mange and had severe skin infections. He was not going to survive much longer, especially with cold weather coming. Thankfully, she was able to convince his owner to surrender him to CVETS so they could treat him. Freddie went directly to the hospital for care, and spent the next 2 weeks getting fluids, skin treatments, and multiple small meals throughout the day to help him gain strength. Because of his condition, the doctors initially believed Freddie was a senior, but after further assessment, they think he’s only 2 or 3 years old and, amazingly, heartworm negative!! We were lucky to find an awesome foster family in SC, Ramya & Srikanth, who graciously welcomed Freddie into their home and have already started working with him to help him integrate into home life, learn the rules and basic commands. Until Freddie is neutered, they are doing a gradual introduction to their pack, but thus far he’s been good with other dogs he’s met. We’ve discovered that Freddie loves people and is very social little guy. He loves to go for walks, and as he gains strength, he has energy to spare. He’s crate trained, housetrained, and has taken a liking to hanging out on his foster mom’s bed...who can blame him. He’s come a long way in 3 short weeks, and we look forward to sharing updates on this sweet boy’s progress. FOSTER UPDATE - 12/15/18 Freddie has been in his foster home 3 weeks, his skin is improving, but has a way to go and he's 10 to 15 lbs underweight. He's been neutered, had all his shots, and had full blood work done and has no major medical issues. Here's and update from his foster mom "Freddie is definitely progressing. He has adapted well, he knows his routine. He loves his walks and he poops a LOT!!! He loves people and kids too! Even on walks, he is interested to go over to people ( although I haven’t taken him up to anyone) he has met my neighbor and he loved her. He is not interested in meeting any dogs on walks. He doesn’t pay attention even when they bark. He only barks at our dogs, Atticus and Rocky, but he has not been fully introduced to them yet. He still has some spots on his body that are bare and healing, and he's itchy. We have to cone collar on him whenever we can watch him. He doesn’t seem to mind. Plus, we don’t want him messing with his neuter stitches. He is eating well, almost 4 cups a day. The doctor said to feed him for his actual weight about 60-65 lbs. He is a snuggle bug! Loves to lie on the lap. Loves belly rubs. Of course I love him! He is our baby! He likes his crate, he will chill out in, and he loves our bed. He hasn’t figured toys yet or doesn’t care for the ball. I am really hoping once all the 3 dogs become friends, they will teach him :) He loves cold weather and doesn’t mind the rain. He will take me for long walks no matter how cold!" Freddie's initial introduction to the family dogs was not as smooth as we hoped. We are brought in a trainer to help with basic obedience and corrections on walk, and Freddie will be walking with the rest of the pack daily, and we will reintroduce in a week or two. He's just post neuter and needs more time to decompress. More to come... We plan to bring Freddie to N. VA mid January and need a FOSTER or ADOPTER to welcome him home when he arrives. Apply today! BREED ESTIMATE: AmStaff Mix GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: ~47 lbs (should be about 60lbs) APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 2 to 3 years COAT TYPE: short ADOPTION FEE: $350 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/hw negative LOCATION: NEEDS LOCAL FOSTER FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to adopt.worthydog and complete the application. Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Ailayah. This cute girl was turned into an overcrowded rural shelter in SC because her family owned too many dogs. Because there are too many dogs in SC that need homes, she is expected to travel to NoVA in mid-January. Ailayah is a sweet and loving pup who gets along well with other dogs. She's described as mild mannered. Ailayah spent many days outdoors but was brought indoors in the evenings. She loves to cuddle under a blanket and appreciates indoor life. Ailayah does well on a leash and loves to ride in a truck (or a car/SUV will do). The only problem is that Ailayah does have some prey drive and so could not be trusted to remain in the truck when she spotted a squirrel. She has been known to chase the neighborhood squirrels from her yard and so is quite true to her terrier nature. As a result, we don't know how she'd do with cats so a cat-free home would be best. She is currently in a foster home while awaiting travel to DC and she's been exposed to living with kids. SC FOSTER MOM UPDATE "Aaliyah is a sweet girl. She has been with me since the morning of 12/24. From the moment I brought her to my house she seem very grateful that she was in a home. Upon meeting her she came right over sat with me and then rolled over. When she met my 5yr son she did the same thing. She is house and crate trained, walks well on a lead, and very much enjoys laying on the couch next to you. She likes to fetch the ball when it’s tossed, although she will sometimes not bring it back. Right now I would say that she is a low to moderate energy dog. She gets along great with my pack ( we have multiple other small dogs of all age ranges)." Ailayah is currently being treated for heartworm and will travel to town in late January. If you are interested in adopting her, please do apply today. Apply today! Breed: Terrier mix Weight: 18 lbs Age: 4 years Gender: Female Adoption fee: $350 Vetting: updated on vaccines, dewormed, spayed, microchipped. Location: foster home in SC. Breed: Chesapeake Bay Retriever
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chesapeake Bay Retriever (medium coat). Meet Tina. This sweet girl found herself in an overcrowded rural shelter in SC, along with her 4 young pups. Worthy Dog will be bringing her to the DC area in January where she will be ready and waiting for her new family in a few weeks. Tina is a sweet and loving dog who gets along well with people. She has been fostered with 5 other dogs in her foster home, and does well with them all. She's a young, active playful pup and would be best suited in a home with another young playful pup, or as an only dog too. Tina is not a good fit with cats, and likes to chase. Tina dreams of a home and family where she can be loved and well cared for. She's a social pup who enjoys meeting new people and is ready to learn new skills like walking on a leash, sit, and stay. Like all young dogs, she will benefit from some basic obedience training as she does jump on people when she wants a person's attention. Overall, she is an active dog who will do best in a home committed to exercising her regularly and where someone can spend time with her. SC FOSTER MOM UPDATE: "Hey! I took Tina to the shelter today and introduced her to some new dogs and one of our junior volunteers. She did great with everyone! I was so proud of how her. She rode well in the car, uncrated. She was reluctant to jump in for me, but I has no trouble getting her to jump out. She stayed with us for over 4 hours and not one moment of trouble. She was such a good girl in a very busy environment. She has energy, but I was really happy to see her "dial down" when it was just us and when she was with the child volunteer, she was very calm and respectful." If you are interested in fostering or adopting Tina, please do submit an application. Sunset (aka ...

    Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This gorgeous girl, Sunset (a.k.a. Sunny), was rescued by a police officer in Rock Hill, SC who found her running down a busy road while on patrol. Officer Jonathan was able to locate her home, and discovered she was being kept in an outdoor pen without food or clean water, and her owners felt no commitment or responsibility for her. Instead of taking her to the local shelter which he knew would likely mean euthanasia, this kind officer took Sunset home and fostered her for 2 months. This is not the first pup Officer Jonathan has saved. Last year, he rescued River, a black pit girl who was adopted to a loving home in Leesburg. Sunset was one lucky dog to have Officer Jonathan looking out for her. Our SC team works closely with law enforcement and animal control officers in this area to help educate and change the way people treat dogs, and ensure that there are consequences for mistreatment. We are so fortunate to know officers like Jonathan who go out of their way to protect the pups, and fostering a stray dog like Sunset in your own home is really going above and beyond the call of duty. Sunset was fostered with two other dogs and two kids (2 and 11 years old) in the officer's home. She was playful and great with the kids. She’s a confident dog, but also social by nature, and just needs time to adapt to other dogs and does great. She’s crate trained, house trained, and is an active dog that still has some puppy enthusiasm and goofiness in her. Officer Jonathan says she listens well and is very smart. FOSTER UPDATE - Fairfax, VA When Sunny arrived in N Va we realized she was a very sweet pup who needed some work on her dog greeting and leash skills. It took her a few days to settle into her foster home with the family dog, but once she did, they've been best friends, and are very sweet and respectful with each other. We brought in a trainer to work with Sunny on her leash skills, and she's come a long way. Her foster parents, Erica and Jeremy, have done a great job working with her to get where she is today. "We’ve been having an amazing time with Sunny! She is a sweet, active, confident girl with lots of puppy energy & goofiness. After having her with us for 2 weeks, she’s finally really settled in and is doing so well! Her favorite things are playing, walking, hanging out/cuddling with us, and exploring the outdoors. She seems to get along with other dogs and is social. Shows some reactivity with new dogs on leash, which we are still working through, but she's great with our pup now. Sunny LOVES learning and is very smart. She picked up on “sit” within about 15 minutes, and now we’re working on “lay down” and “high five”. She’s treat / food driven, so makes training sessions easy. Her energy level is high, and she will probably do best in a home with a yard she can run in, and a family who enjoys spending time outdoors with her on walks and other activities. Any yard should have a tall and secure fence - she does like to try and climb a little bit. She’s mostly curious and trying to explore the neighborhood rather than run away - comes back willingly when called. She has a great protective nature and is very loyal. She has saved us from many lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, mail carriers, and squirrels lol. She’s GREAT with new people and strangers and non-aggressive when it comes to food and water. Sunny is a big bundle of joy and will be such a great part of any active, patient, and loving family who’s ready for her! " FOSTER UPDATE 10/10/18 “Sunny has brought a lot of joy and energy into our home. Her favorite things are walks, food, playtime with her foster sister Molly, chasing squirrels, meeting new people/dogs, and cuddling on the couch. She will do anything for a treat, and enjoys spending time practicing commands each day. She has mastered "sit", "crate", and "lay down". We've worked with the trainer on Sunny’s leash reactive behavior, and she’s doing GREAT now! She has learned to ignore barking from other dogs and loud sounds when walking, and responds really well to simple corrections if she happens to get excited. Such a huge improvement for a pup who had probably never been walked on a leash before just months ago. Sunny is extremely social and gentle with humans, and loves kids too. She enjoys welcoming new guests into our home, and everyone she meets comments on how sweet and good-natured she is. She still needs a gradual to new dogs, but we are working on it and she’s improving. After a week or two of warming up, she and our pup, Molly, became absolute best friends and have no issues. Sunny's is an active pup, but she also loves cozying up in her crate or wherever her humans are when she's inside. A family with dog experience and a more active lifestyle (hiking, running, camping, etc.) would be the perfect fit for this spunky girl." Sunny is still waiting for her forever home, and is so lucky to have awesome, committed foster parents, Erica & Jeremy, who have helped her transition into a great family dog. Apply today to meet Sunny and welcome her home.
