More About Mastiff Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Meet Kiki! She was rescued from a shelter in TX just in the nick of time, she was on her last day. She had a bit of a rough start with us, first she came down with a bad upper respiratory infection from the shelter and was sick for a couple of weeks with that. She covered and was healthy enough for her spay surgery. The surgery itself went great but about 5 days later she chewed her stitches out and have to have a second surgery. Poor Kiki! Despite her medical setbacks, she's just been a super sweet dog throughout, loving the extra attention she's been getting at the vet's office. The vet estimated Kiki at about 2 years old, but her foster parents think she could be as young as one. She still acts very much a puppy but at 90 pounds she is full grown and we think there could be something else in the mix, maybe some Boxer? It's hard to tell but with her smaller size and being more active than your average Mastiff, it's definitely possible. Kiki is excitable when meeting new people but has done great with the kids she's met. She has done well with other dogs but not recommended for a home with cats. We would love Kiki's adopters to continue the basic training we've started, she knows some commands but still need someone to show her the ropes. Is that family yours? Kiki is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

GPMR adopts to the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana and parts of Colorado. !!!Any mastiffs being adopted out of the state of Oklahoma require a health certificate to be paid for by the adopter!!! ***Bear's adoption fee is waived! Meet Bear! Bear was rescued from a shelter in AR. The vet estimated him at 5 years old but his foster mom thinks he's at least 7-8 years old. He looks like he's had a rough life before coming to us. He has callouses on his legs indicating he was probably living outside on rough surface. His coat was thin and patchy but has improved now that we've got him on a good diet. Bear has been good with other dogs and lives with cats as well. He's done great with kids but older kids (over 8) would be best. He also would be best with a home with calmer dogs. This boy is really just a big teddy bear. This poor guy has been through a lot since we've had him. Bear tested positive for heartworms and started treatment, but then started having several fainting spells, so the vet felt it was best to stop the treatment as he was worried Bear's heart wouldn't be able to take it. Thankfully it's been several months since he fainted, and we also recently retested him for heartworms and he is NEGATIVE! We are so happy for Bear! Bear also had surgery shortly after he arrived to rescue to remove bladder stones that were obtructing him. He now is on a prescription diet to keep those from reforming, which costs approximately $85 a bag. When the winter weather rolled in, Bear has started showing signs of arthritis. We've started him on supplements and prescription medications for his arthritis as needed when he's having a hard day. He also gained a little more weight that he needed so we're hoping the diet and warner weather will help him feel better. Despite all of this, he has remained and loving and loyal companion. He is looking for a special home, is that home yours? If you aren't able to adopt, please consider a donation for his care! Bear is being fostered in Edmond, OK. Meet Jack! Jack was rescued over the summer when he was found laying in a ditch on the side of the road. At 67 pounds he was emaciated and he would not have made it much longer being outside in the summer heat. A local rescued picked up Jack and started him on the road to health before transferring him to GPMR to find him a forever home. The vet estimates Jack between 2 and 3 years old. Jack was diagnosed with Ehrlichia which a disease that is caused by a tick bite. Some dogs have Ehrlichica and never show any signs of it, but poor Jack had several episodes of fevers and joiint pain. Those flare ups were treated and he has been doing great ever since. We had an approved home waiting for Jack but sadly they had to withdraw their application due to an illness with their other dog. So now we are searching for a forever home for Jack! Jack has a very loving personality and he does great with other dogs. He's not been around cats since we've had him. Jack would do great in a home with kids over 5 years. We suspect he may be a Mastiff mix due to his smaller stature but he has all the personailty of a Mastiff! Jack is being fostered in Tulsa, OK. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Meet Ollie! He was rescued from a shelter when he was surrendered by his owner who could not keep him any more. Ollie is about 8 years old, maybe older. and he has some arthritis that we often see with these older guys. We've started him on meds for that and it seems to make him feel better so far. Thankfully he tested negative for heartworms, we were thrilled! He also had a lump removed that thankfully was benign. Ollie's foster mom reports he is extremely smart. He figured out how to open the trash can and also a gate. Pretty impressive for a Mastiff! He does well with other dogs. A home without young kids would be best due to his arthritis, we wouldn't want any little ones accidentally falling on Ollie and hurting him. He was rescued from the Animal Humane in Albuquerque, NM, when he was 1 year old. Tato does well with other animals, but has never lived with cats. He tolerates children, but loves them when they have food. His idea of a good day is a nice walk and then lounging over your legs and getting a thousand pets and licks. He has been through basic and intermidiate behavior training and would do well in a home that could maintain his training. He is very easily spooked and can show dominant tendencies if unchecked. He is a indoor/outdoor dog that goes into his kennel with no problem. Be ready for a lot of love. He currently lives in New Braunfels, TX. Save a Mastiff...Adopt, Foster, Volunteer!

Hoss lived with other dogs in his previous home and has done well with dogs while with us. We don't know how he is with cats. Hoss is current on vaccines and tested negative for heartworms. He was treated for intestinal parasites and ear infections, both of which are pretty common for our new rescues. He is a super sweet boy and reminds us of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh - such a droopy face! Like most Mastiffs he love to lounge on the couch. It's costly for the rescue to keep up with the monthly expenses for our hospice dogs, please consider a donation for their care! Meet Goliath! Although his age in years is 11, his "Spirit Age" is so much younger. Goliath, sadly, was surrendered by his owners when they moved and were unable to take him. He is very shy with strangers at first, but warms up quickly, especially when offered belly rubs! Goliath prefers to be around an older more mature crowd, so a family without young children is necessary. He has spent most of his life outside, and is now working on adjusting to being an inside dog. He has shown his foster family that his most treasured discovery is his inside soft doggie bed! Such a simple discovery with life changing results. Goliath came to GPMR with ear and eye infections, both of which have been treated. He did test positive for heartworms, which is has not shown to be severe and can be treated with monthly heart worm prevention. He is also on supplements for arthritis, which help him act his "Spirit Age". Goliath's trademark, and funniest trait, is his super long tongue which tends to hang out on the floor when he is laying down. Meet Tyson! He was rescued by a good samaritan when their neighbor was not caring for him proerly. They nursed Tyson back to health but wanted him to go to a family where he could be provided with the veterinary care that he needed. Tyson's vet visit was full of information. We learned that he is at least 10 years old. He came in with terrible skin and ear infections which we are currently treating. He had fleas and intestinal parasites, both which have been treated. He unfortunately tested positive for heartworm but the vet doesn't recommend treatment due to his age. The vet also suspects Tyson has testicular cancer as he was never neutered which would have prevented this condition. Due to Tyson's advanced age and medical issues, he is considered a "Hospice Foster" meaning his foster home will provide a loving home and keep him happy for as much time as he left. So far he seems unaware he has these health problems and is in good spirits. Please consider making a donation for his care as he will have several follow up vet visits! Tyson has an amazing personality and temperament wise is a great represenation of the Mastiff breed.
