Akita

A.K.A. : Akita Inu, Japanese Akita, American Akita, Great Japanese Dog
Overview: The Akita was developed to hunt bears in Japan and, as such, is a great guard dog. They're strong and loyal, often employed by police for active duty.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): male:85-130, female:65-110
Height (in): male:25-28, female:23-26
Colors: Any color, including white, pinto, or brindle.
Coat: The hair is straight and coarse, and the undercoat is soft and dense.
Character: Akitas are intelligent and calm. Though great watch dogs, they bark infrequently.
Temperament: This breed prefers not to have other dogs in the family. There may be problems if they do not become acquainted with cats and other household pets early in life. They get along with children that are respectful of their space.
Care: The Akita is a shedder. At least twice a year, groom it with a metal-toothed comb.
Training: A good deal of patience and persistence is required when training this breed.
Activity: Akitas are able to adjust to your schedule. Daily walks are good, but they seem to handle foregoing a walk, if needed.
Country of Origin: Japan
Health Issue: This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, immune diseases, skin problems, eye, and knee problems.
Life Expectancy: 10-12

More About Akita Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed. Adoption Fee: $350.00. This is Fat. He came from Louisiana. He belonged to his recent owner's mom. Rather than turn him into a shelter when mom was gone, this nice lady brought him back when she moved to the NoVa area and was going to try to keep him. This lady had never owned a dog in her life, nor was she a dog person. She called rescue to see if we could help. I went out to meet him and was totally charmed by the personable, little guy. I offered some suggestions which the new owner followed through. She had him neutered and updated on shots. The family was working with him and there was someone home most of the day. But then everyone got a job or was at school. With no fenced in yard, he was tied out when they were home or kept in the sunroom. With all the best intentons in the world, things just were not working out for him and the family. The lady called us back and said they just could not keep him, so Armac agreed to take him. Fat needs some training in leashwalking, which has been placeed on hold during his heartworm treatment. His favorite exercise..zooming around the yard at the highest possible speed is also on hold. His tail curls and drapes over his back when he is walking/happy. He goes in the crate if you throw a treat in. He lived with a small dog and children as an outside dog. He has not shown any aggression to the resident dogs, but was a bit too predatory toward the kitties. He is adjusting and we will keep you updated

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Icey and her companion were left at the shelter when one of her owners needed surgery. She was stressed out at first, but they were able to handle her within 24 hours. Both are currently being boarded at this time. Here is what the kennel owner says about her: Icy Spicy; Very sweet, loves to snuggle and get petted. Very patient for brushing and bathing, but does not like her nails trimmed. Listens well and knows some basic commands, walks ok on the slip lead with minimal pulling. Loves to play and sometimes can get jumpy when the playing gets exciting. Came in with Spartacus. They are not housed together, but can play in the yard together. She will need a home with some experience in large, dominant breeds. Written for Icy by her foster home: ISO: A forever home. My name is Isis (aka Icey Spicy). Even though they call me Icey… I’m very warm and loving. I bond quickly to my person and love to get cuddles and give kisses. I’m 72 lbs. of love. I’m a pretty smart girl and know commands and respond well to most of them. Sit, down and come are my favorites and I do know “off” and “leave it”, but need to hear them a couple of times before I respond. I have lots of energy and love to run around in the yard and play fetch. I’ll bound up and down the stairs. I can get overly excited sometimes and it takes a few minutes for me to calm down. I do like my toys but don’t destroy them. My foster mom only gives me two at a time as I leave them lying around everywhere. I like to collect things, so if I see a dish towel hanging off the counter or a glove or sock laying around, I’m going to get them. I’m not food possessive and will sit before my food is placed down. I like my crate and go in willingly. Don’t leave me home without putting me in the crate as I don’t like being alone can act out. I’m a great protector of my home. I’ll bark when the doorbell rings or even if someone pulls into the driveway. I’ll always let you know when you get a delivery. My biggest challenge right now if pulling on leash… I’m so excited to be outside, I do pull, but I’m getting a little better each day when I wear my “freedom harness” …. My foster mom is being patient and working to get me to be a good girl on leash. I’m not too sure about other dogs. I get very enthusiastic when I see other dogs, but haven’t had any intros yet. I will bark and pull especially when they bark and pull back. I’ll need work on dog introductions. OH and did I say, I’m looking for my forever home. Her fosster mom went away on a business trip and Ms. Isis's behavior improved measurably on her return. Sometimes absence makes things a little bettter.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Caesar was at large for 3 months. He was finally darted and brought into the shelter. His owner declined to take him saying he was dog aggressive. The shelter staff loved him and contacted rescue saying he had less than 48hours. We agreed to take him, they neutered him, and in less than 48hours he was on his way to ARMAC. Shortly after he arrived, his scrotum filled with blood and he had to undergo another surgery to remove his sac completely. So far he shows no aggression to non-reactive dogs. If a dog acts in an aggressive manner toward him, he will respond in kind, but is controllable. He walks very well on leash, his room has become the kitty hangout, he has been affectionate to his foster family, althogh he is not enthused about being hugged. His affection is the pet me and let me hang out with you kind. He is afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks. The last thunderstorms we had a few weeks ago late at night elicited no reaction. Wondering if being in the house full time has helped with that issue. Caesar is currently undergoing heartworm treatment

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Bruno and his companion, Eva, were taken on a humane hold by animal control when neighbors complained they had no food, water or shelter. The owners signed them over to AC. Bruno seems to be quite good with people when they have visited him. Bruno would be best as an only pet in a home with no small children !! Bruno is now in a foster home. Here is their comments about him. First a couple of "health" comments: He's eating well now. At the kennel he had a tendency toward runny eyes; this seems to have resolved. We've noticed some stiffness when he's been lying still for a while - stiffness when he begins to stand, and sometimes a limp for a few minutes. This goes away once he's up and moving, and he does not seem to be in pain but wondering if he has some hip/joint discomfort. Overall - adjustments to the household - both dogs and people - continue. We've made no attempt to introduce Zoe and Bruno, and our house set up makes keeping them separate pretty easy. Bruno enjoys his "house time", and loves attention, but is perfectly willing to curl up and chill if the house is quiet. He tends to put himself to bed fairly early - he'll go into his kennel and curl up on his blanket usually between 8 & 8:30. However, he is awake and ready to go out around 5:00 a.m. -- and he is not quiet about it! We are trying to make a point of engaging him later in the evening in the hopes he'll sleep a little later in the morning. He is quite curious, and at this point has few boundaries with respect to "people things". He loves soft things (plush blankets and throws, hats, yarn . . . ) and will wander off with them given the opportunity. I have discovered that he can open my "yarn box" - he's learned to flip the lid - so I now know that I have to put that up out of reach! He does not chew on furniture, which is a good thing. He listens to "no", so it is not difficult to get him to leave something alone. I am watching Jodi's "toy" reviews on Facebook with some interest, as he totally destroys plush toys in a matter of minutes. We don't like to leave things in his kennel that he might destroy and then choke on, but would be interested in ideas for "safe" chew toys to leave with him during the day, as he really must be kenneled when we are gone during the day. Both dogs have been loving it this week because Stephen has been on vacation and has been home all week! He does not seem to much like stairs - he'll go down into the basement sometimes (he has a blanket down there too), but needs to be encouraged to come back up. He has not gone up the stairs to the 2nd floor from the kitchen. Other comments: He is affectionate and seems to like people; when there were too many people in the living room on Christmas Eve he wandered over to the door and let it be known that he'd rather be outside. He is not terribly vocal - he doesn't bark much (except first thing in the morning when he wants to go out!) - he will bark when a delivery truck comes up the drive. He typically does not bark when someone he knows enters the house (he now knows all the "regulars") -- very unlike Zoe! Some observations on the "other dog" awareness: As noted above, we have not made any attempt to introduce the dogs. They are both clearly aware that the other one is here. Bruno is pretty disinterested - doesn't tend to pay much attention if he can hear Zoe in the next room. When he first got here, Zoe would whine at the door if Bruno was in the house - that has become much less frequent. She has actually been very gracious - she does not bark or fuss when it is Bruno's house time. She is getting much better at self-distracting; on the few instances where Bruno has been in his yard and Zoe has been out on her run, she will go out to the end and look. She has not been barking at him, and will quickly wander back up on to the porch. If she does seem to be staring, she is very easy to distract with a verbal "come back", but tends to self-distract more often than not. Have to admit that we don't have this particular situation very often, so it may not mean a whole lot yet. With the holidays and the cold we haven't gotten out. We will be taking him to a local "dog wash" fairly soon, and will get him out for a walk off the farm so we can see how he does. I would like to do some obedience training with him, but don't want to start a class in January - will research the options further on that. We do basic obedience work with him in the house, but I do want to see how he does in a "class" setting with other dogs (and I like obedience work!)

Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed. Adoption Fee: $250.00. Marlena grabbed our hearts with her goofy pictures. A 7 year old female, who had been taken to the shelter by her owner because they did not have time for her. The shelter thought she had mammary tumors, but according to our vet, they are cysts. She had a wart on her front paw which has been removed and is now ready to find her new home. She is more active than our Akitas, but does exhibit certain behaviors that show her Akita heritage. She is protective of her territory and will sound off when strangers approach it. She loves people !! just loves people!! She is a little more active than my dogs, but I am used to the calmer Akitas. She passed her temp test at the shelter with flying colors. Her aggression score was 0. She was okay with a large male dog, did not react to the child doll. She is a bit predatory and would be best in a home where there are no small dogs or cats. She will ignore small dogs untless they act aggressively, but her response is easily checked. She will try to chase squirrels while walking and pulls a bit on the lead..working on that. She crates but would rahter be out with her people..does not try to escape or destroy the crate, but can be vocal about getting out at times. She knows commands and since she is food oriented, is an easy train. Her tail is set on "permanent wag" and will beat you to death with it when she is very happy. She is a big love bug and just wants to have a family who will return that huge resevoir of love residing in her. We think her mix may be either boxer or pitt bull.

Posted Breed: Akita. Adoption Fee: $300.00. Honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better house guest. He's completely potty trained and hasn't had any accidents in the house. He really loves our GSD, Greta. They have become pretty much inseparable. He's fine with the cats. If they run he will chase them, but we can call him off right away. If he catches up to them before we call him off, he doesn't do anything. Just looks back and has this look like "what do I do now?" He's been great with the horses. Shows little to no interest in them. He was very interested in the bird for the first few weeks and the one time she flew, I believe had he got her he would have had a before dinner snack. We started really correcting his interest in her and he's now figured out that the bird is absolutely off limits and now pays no attention to her. He can not be crated. He gets very stressed out in the crate and starts shedding like crazy, drooling, and really mentally shuts down. Once that happens and we bring him out, it takes him a while to recover from it. When we leave, he stays loose in the house and isn't destructive, doesn't use the bathroom, and just appears to go lay on the couch (he's left his evidence behind multiple times). We have left him in the house unattended for up to 4 hours at a time. He's extremely smart, takes direction well, and thrives off leadership. Once he figured out the rules of the house are not negotiable, he hasn't tried taking advantage of any situation and has settled into a playful, goofy, fun loving guy. He LOVES people. LOVES them. Anyone who comes to the house he greets immediately and will happily melt into the floor for a belly rub. He does bark when someone knocks, but has no reservations about us letting people in. Aside from getting on the couch when no one is home to tell him to get off and possibly wanting to snack on the bird, we have seen no behaviors that could be deemed "bad". (Honestly, who doesn't want a comfy place to lay down or a funky blue chicken for a snack). He does not counter surf, has not dug in the garbage, doesn't go for food in our hands, doesn't jump up on us (he will do a happy bunny hop in front of you when you get home though), he sleeps next to our bed on the floor all night, (he may steal a robe out of the hamper a time or 2 to sleep on, but he always returns it to you when he's done), and is just very calm and chill in the house. When we go for walks he does not drag me, he will give gentle tugs until I tell him "ah ah" and then he begrudgingly comes back down to my pace. He does play with balls and tugs when he sees our dog do it, but once she is done, he is done as well. I don't think he really knew what playing with toys was, but he seems to follow our dogs lead in what to do. I believe he would benefit with a female companion in his new home, especially one that is awkward as his current one, I think she makes him feel normal. Car rides- after our first ride together when I brought him home (he rode well) and he was very stressed we decided to take him on outings that didn't involve him being transferred to people. He has really started enjoying our rides, he especially likes it when Greta can come too even though he hogs the back seat. He jumps right in the car now with no hesitation, sticks his nose in the window signaling for me to crack it, and after a few minutes lays down and just enjoys the ride. I'll close my novel with, he's simply amazing.

Hi, my name is Niko and I’m a 7 year old Akita who weighs around 95 lbs. Let me tell you a little about myself. I can be the biggest couch potato who loves to hang out with my foster family, but I also enjoy taking long walks. My foster mom walks me for 40 minutes every day and if she tries to cut it short, I’ll stop and let her know we aren’t done yet. I have very good manners inside the house. While I do well with the other resident dogs in my foster home, I would really prefer to be the only dog. I like older children who are dog savvy and know how to give me my space when I need it. You’re probably wondering where I came from. Freedom Farm rescued me 5 years ago when I ended up at a Ft. Campbell shelter. In my first foster home, I was the only dog and I loved all the attention. Shortly after I was rescued, the 2010 flood happened. My foster mom was so scared because her house had started to flood. So she grabbed me and my leash and we headed to higher ground. Luckily, some nice people were out in boats helping families and they picked us up and took us to safety. After that, I did have to go into boarding for a little while. That’s when a family saw me and took me home. Sadly, I was recently returned to Freedom Farm because I wasn’t used to having a baby around. Overall, I’m in pretty good health for my age. I do have thyroid medicine that I take every day and I’m taking glucosamine to help with my arthritis. I’m a sweet boy who loves to meet new people. Do you have a spot on your couch for me?Niko is located in Nashville Tennesee. Contact Kim at akitas2love@gmail.com for more information
