If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • American Bulldog-Border Collie Mix Dog For Adoption in HOUSTON, TX, USA

      verified verified

      Breed: American Bulldog-Border Collie Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Skylar is a brown and white female Border Collie American Bulldog mix dog for adoption to a very loving home in or near Houston Texas. This very special Dog is 2 1/2 years old and is a medium sized dog, weighing about 30 pounds. As if being incredibly cute weren’t enough, Skylar the Border Collie Bulldog mix is about the nicest dog you will find in Houston! This gorgeous 2 year old female dog is healthy, fixed, up to date on shots, crate trained and house broken. Skylar is very good with children, and gets along well with other pets – both dogs and cats. She is a medium sized dog at 30 pounds, and has a smooth, short white coat with big patches of tan. She has the longest tail in Texas, and big, pointy ears that are somewhat perky and somewhat droopy. With a big tan patch over one eye, Skylar is so adorable that you can’t look at her without breaking a smile. This ready-to-love dog is being rehomed by her owners, who want the very best for her. They are not able to give Skylar the time, attention or exercise she needs and deserves, and are worried for her well-being. They know she would make such a great addition to the lives of the right family – people who have more time to take her for walks, play fetch with her, and generally give her the companionship she thrives on. Unfortunately, schedules have become so busy with work and raising small children (and with another on the way) that Skylar spends far too much time in her crate. She deserves a family who can make her their focus. .Skylar is a perfect addition to a family with children, but would also be a wonderful companion for active, retired dog lovers. She will be rehomed with all of her supplies and vet records. There is a $150 adoption/rehoming fee. Supplies and veterinary records will be included. Contact our Houston dog rehoming team today. Call or text (888) 720-3322 (and mention Skylar), or email us at

    • Chihuahua Dog For Adoption in SPARKS, NV, USA

      verified verified

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Anyone familiar with the Chihuahua breed knows just how enchanting and special these little lap dogs are. You probably also know how they hate surprises and unpredictable kids and animals. Digit, a 20 pound 7 year old Chihuahua mix, is no exception. Well behaved, devoted and affectionate, Digit is a cuddle bunny who loves to play with cats, sleep in bed with you, and take long naps in the sunshine. He is very healthy, fixed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and house trained. Digit will be the perfect match for a single or couple without children or other dogs. He is best suited to living in an apartment, and would do well as a companion for senior or retired dog lovers. Digit is very timid when it comes to other dogs and children. When he feels he is in danger, he responds by barking and nipping, like many other Chihuahuas. Currently he is in the wrong situation – a home with small children and other dogs. He is very fearful of children, and when provoked will nip. Digit’s owners love him very much and want the best for him. They realize that he is not happy in their home, and conversely, their baby is at risk of being bitten. The very best scenario will be to find Digit the quiet, child-free home he needs and very much deserves. There is a $50 adoption processing fee. All supplies and veterinary records will be included. Questions about Digit? Contact our Sun Valley Dog rehoming team today. Text “Digit” to (888) 833-2128 or email We look forward to hearing from you. If you have room in your heart, home (and lap) for this cute little 20 pound bundle of love and licks, please offer Digit his forever home today.

    • Australian Shepherd-German Shepherd Dog Mix Dog For Adoption in LAKEWOOD, WA, USA

      verified verified

Breed: Australian Shepherd-German Shepherd Dog Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Baby
      Location: USA
Ayce is an adorable 10 week old German Shepherd Aussie mix puppy looking for a very special home in Lakewood WA, near Seattle Tacoma. Ayce is a smart and very cute pup. He is 10 weeks old and has already been house trained. Ayce is so cute. He is literally like a little furry baby. He loves his toys and treats. He is snuggly and sweet. His owners are an active military couple working very long hours. Because of this, they are unable to provide the care he needs for his health issue. We are looking for a permanent home for Ayce, but due to an impending deployment, a foster home would be fine until a permanent home can be located. Ayce just got diagnosed with megaesophagus where he is required to eat sitting upright and was recommended eating in a “bailey chair.” Megaesophagus is when a dog has an enlarged esophagus that doesn’t allow the food to properly be transported into his stomach like a normal dog. This was a genetic disorder and unfortunately if he is not sitting completely upright when he drinks or eats, he will regurgitate his food as his food will just stay in his esophagus if he does not consume his food at the correct position/angle. The vet also recommended that he stays in his eating position for another 30 minutes to allow the food to actually settle into his stomach. Please offer sweet little Ayce the special home he needs and deserves today. All vet records and supplies will be included. There is a $150 adoption/rehoming fee. Supplies and veterinary records included. Contact our Seattle dog rehoming team today. Call or text +12532012994 or email We look forward to hearing from you.
