    rescue
    Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois / German Shepherd Dog. Adoption Fee: $275. German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (.heartlandgsrescue) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information. Kalen is a smart energetic, outgoing, happy boy. He will go in his crate when you are not home and at night, but would prefer to snuggle with you in bed, if he is allowed. He does great on the leash and loves to go on walks. He enjoys riding in the car and going anywhere with you. Everything is an adventure to him. He goes to the door when he needs to go to the bathroom, sits nicely for treats, loves chewing on nylabones, and is a lover who will follow you everywhere you go in the house or in the yard. Kalen truly loves being with his humans. He knows basic commands and sits calmly when you are preparing dinner and while you are eating a meal. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and loves to play with them. When Kalen is done playing, he enjoys napping on a soft dog bed. Kalen is very alert and doesn't miss a thing. He is very easy going and always looking for something fun to do with you. Kalen can be a little timid and cautious around strangers, and needs slow, managed introductions to new people in the home. Because of that, a home without kids, and without too many new people coming and going would be best for this sweet, fun, lovable boy. Kalen's adoption fee is $275, all of which goes back into offsetting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.

Please review the section on our website (.heartlandgsrescue) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information. Hugo is a handsome, very sweet young boy who came to us from a Reservation in SD, after he was found injured with deep punctures wounds on his chest, possibly caused by a mountain lion attack. Hugo never let that bring him down or slow him down. He is now fully healed, and ready for his furever home! Hugo is approximately 2 y.o. He is an initially shy, loving young dog with a gentle personality. You couldn’t ask for a more devoted companion than Hugo! He gets along well with other dogs of all sizes, is learning how to play, and enjoys toys and chews. Devoted and sweet, bright and eager, Hugo is an absolute delight! Hugo is such a wonderful guy! He loves his people, his belly rubs, and his pillow, but is also a great partner for walks. We have no doubt that with some more practice he would be a great jogging partner. And he's truly perfect, because he also loves to relax in the house and cuddle up for a movie! Hugo can be a little shy and unsure around strangers and will need slow, managed introductions to new people in the home (or to be crated, when visitors are over). Because of that, a home without kids, and without too many new people coming and going would be best for this sweet, gentle, lovable boy. Hugo really loves his Kong toy filled with peanut butter! Hugo has learned crate-up on command ("go to bed") and is a very smart boy who is eager to please and ready to learn more. He’s fully house-trained and has taken to walking on a leash very easily (although he will still need some patient training to be a real pro). Hugo can get a little anxious in his crate, but keeps getting better at it, especially if there's another dog next to him. Hugo is a wonderful boy who keeps learning and blossoming as he becomes more comfortable in his new surroundings. We have no doubt that with time and patience, he will continue to do so in his new home. Being around other dogs has helped Hugo adjust and gain confidence faster. Because of that, we would like for Hugo to have a dog buddy in his forever home. Hugo is a truly fabulous, very adaptable dog, that would be the delight of just about any dog lover! Hugo's adoption fee is $225, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Nelli

    rescue
    Breed: Italian Greyhound
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). Sweet, beautiful 9 yo Little Miss Nelli comes to us from the south and is continuing her social rehabilitation in one of our wonderful foster homes in Lincoln, NE. She is new to us so we are still learning about her. What we do know is she came from a puppy mill living out her entire life in a cage and came into rescue weighing 5#.. No way for a dog to live. She is now exploring and learning how to be a dog and how to trust and also how to be someone's pampered pet. She is very active for her 9 years! Don't let her age fool you! She is a funny girl whose tail wags and wags! She will need a home with someone who is familiar with puppy mill dogs or very timid dogs as she will need patience and understanding while she continues her social rehabilitation. She needs a secure, fenced yard as she LOVES to zoom around and run and "hunt". She deserves that after so many years in a cage. She does great with her foster IG siblings and loves to snuggle up with them and learns the "ropes" from them. She has been great with the two other large dogs in the home as well. However, they are calm and not the playful type. She is nervous around large, playful and active dogs. She seems to really enjoy kids as long as they are kind and respectful. She has recently learned leash skills and has been enjoying neighborhood walks as of lately. She is going outside to potty beautifully when let outside throughout the day. She does crate nicely and quiety overnight without a peep or potty breaks and while foster mom is away. She does not prefer to sleep with her human, at least now. She is showing her attachement to her new foster mom so that has been wonderful to watch. She is not a jump in your lap and snuggle kind of dog right now but will allow petting when she trusts you. She is just now learning to sit on foster mom's lap and receive love and take a little nap. Foster mom is unable to pick her up at will but Nelli does know the "kennel" command and when she goes into her kennel, foster mom is able to pick her up. She is slowly getting more comfortable with this. Small dogs in her foster home bring her comfort and we do want her in a home with another small dog or two (even better). Please do undestand that she will be an increased flight risk so great care will be needed when taking her out on leash, or while indoors when doors are opened. She should NEVER be unsupervised outdoors and fence gates will requrie locks so they won't be accidently be left open. If you think you can provide Nelli a patient, safe and nurturing home while understanding that right now she is not the typical "follow you all around the house and jump in your lap and snuggle you under the covers" IG, please get in touch with us. These mill dogs do make wonderful strides once they leave the mill behind but it can take quite a long time and it is very rewarding to watch. Please visit us at midwestigrescue to learn more about the adoption process and to fill out an application. We do require an adoption donation fee to help us cover the cost of vetting while they are in our care. This fee varies depending on their age. Our applicaton process consists of a completed application, vet and two personal reference checks and home visit. We do require that your resident pets be spayed or neutered and have routine veterinary care and check-ups. Our dogs are available for adoption in Nebraska and Iowa and will be considered for adoption to surrounding states (within a reasonable day drive). We DO NOT transport or ship dogs. You would be responsible for picking up from foster home. If you are in a state other than NE or IA, you will need to work with your state's IGCA representative in order to get your application processed and approved before being considered. Please use the website igrescue to find your state's affilate and rescue representative. Thank you for your understanding!

    Slater

    rescue
    Breed: Italian Greyhound
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound (short coat). FOSERTING NEAR DAVENPORT IOWA Slater is a sweet and loving, 10-year-old boy who gets along well with everyone and everything he meets! He loves dogs both big and small and is cat safe, although he will occasionally chase the cat for his entertainment. He loves people, and is happiest when he can curl up on the couch under a blanket next to his family. Slater is happy to go into his crate at night and when his foster mom has to go somewhere, and is always excited to get the special treat that comes with going into his crate. He’s not too happy about going outside when the cold winter wind is blowing, but can be bribed with treats. Slater enjoys toys with squeakers and can spend hours chasing and barking at the squirrels in the backyard so we want Slater placed in a home with a fenced yard as this is how he can comfortably get his exercise. Slater entered rescue weighing almost 25 lbs, but with a healthy diet and exercise, he is now a slim and beautiful 13 lbs. He is very fond of eating, and so his foster family has to be careful not to leave food where he can reach it, and if he finds the pantry door open even a crack, he will get in and start helping himself. He walks well on a leash, but he can’t go for walks anymore due to pain in his front legs. He takes supplements and is fine around the house and yard, but if he does strenuous exercise it causes him pain. Slater had been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and was on medication until it started causing problems with his kidneys. After being off of the medication for a while, tests showed no sign of the Cushing’s disease (for three years now) so he is currently only taking a thyroid medication and the joint supplement. He will require occasional bloodwork to ensure that the Cushing’s doesn’t reappear and that his kidneys continue to function normally. There is no way to know how this disease might affect him in the long-term; he could live a long, healthy life, or the tumor in his pituitary gland could decide to grow, causing neurological problems. He has had no additional problems due to the Cushing’s since the medication was stopped 3 years ago. This boy is incredibly sweet and can’t wait to find a forever home that will give him all of the love and attention he knows he deserves! He has been waiting a looooooong time! Posted Breed: Collie / Anatolian Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Rollie is a sweet boy of about 1.5 years old. His previous owner did not know how to deal with an active breed and did not work with him as much as he needed so gave up and surrendered. He will need someone that can worth him on socialization and have the time to EXERCISE and continue training. He has been around kids and does good. He will need a dog his size or energy level. Too old or too small not a match. Rollie would love a yard to run in and someone or some family that REALLY wants a sweet active family dog. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). We are estimating that Meme is around 3-4 yrs old. She is nervous with new people so it does take a little time to get her comfortable in her new surroundings. Once she knows and trust you, she is very sweet and wants to cuddle. She loves playing with her toys and loves sunbathing. She currently sleeps with the family in bed. She has not been around small kids and is nervous so not sure that would be a match. We are working on house-training and she does really good if let out enough. She has been practicing on leash training, but still needs more practice; so a secured fenced yard is required. She is around 5lbs. She had has had dental work done and can be a barker, so an apartment is not a good fit. Melody and Harmony where found dumped on the side of the road in a wooded area in Arkansas. Thank God someone saw them. It took a couple of days for them to let the nice strangers save them but they are doing great now. We think they are mother and daughter, but they are not bonded and do better separated. Carson is a super handsome 7 month-old boy who is a little timid at first, but very sweet once you get to know him! This is how Carson would describe himself: "Hello, my name is Carson! I didn’t have a whole lot of interaction with anything or anyone before I came into rescue, so I need a little time to get to know you. But once I trust you, I will REALLY trust you and depend on you to show me that things aren’t so scary. I need a little bit of reassurance with anything and everything new. I have discovered this thing called the “hose” and the awesome stuff that comes out of it, I think my foster mom calls it water?? But it is the best stuff ever to play in!! Especially after I get all clean!! I also loooooove all squeaky toys and balls!! I am a big goof ball and once we get to know each other I looooove snuggles and belly rubs. I am still young and need some training and patience because I get sooo excited and just want to show u how much I love u!!". Carson enjoys walks, car rides, hanging out with his humans and the other dogs, and getting yummy treats for being such a good boy! Carson is an absolute sweetheart! He will quickly capture your heart and is so very eager to learn!! Carson will be a very big boy, as he is already 69.5 lbs at 6 months old. He will need an active, experienced owner who will continue to work on his socialization and training. Carson is looking for an active, patient forever home that will not rush him, and that will allow extra time as he adjusts to his new home and continues to learn about the world around him. Being around other dogs really helps Carson come out of his shell and be more confident, so we would like for Carson to have a dog buddy in his forever home. Carson's adoption fee is $400, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped.
